Yahoo's threat when I attempted to post this link
Edited on Sat Jul-30-05 04:16 PM by veracity
I tried posting a link to the blog below on Yahoo News bb. I used the heading: Ever Hear of Operation Northwoods?

My post was refused, but here's what came up:

NOTE: Do not assume you are anonymous when posting to Yahoo! Message Boards. Although your IP address is not displayed on your post, Yahoo! does record your yahoo_id (MY ID HERE) and IP address (MY IP HERE) to help combat abuse. Law enforcement agencies may require Yahoo to disclose information regarding message board postings. Before you post, please read our Privacy Policy.

Is this SOP, or what:
Here's the link to the blog:

1. I don't know about SOP
But you might want to thank Yahoo for the warning. Seems to me they are looking out for your best interests.

4. my post was innocuous
Here's the entire post:

From a blogger:

Some rumors eventually prove to be accurate foreknowledge. I hope that this one turns out to be silly paranoia spawned by someone (me) who gets too much email and worries too much!

and the link...here. That's it.

Why would Operation Northwoods cause Yahoo to reject the post? No, I don't think they're being helpful. I think there's an agreement to cooperate with Big Brother...and they're covering their behinds by not posting anything detrimental to Bushco.

2. Bush Brother is watching you!
It's probably something simple, like a combination of words you used trigering an automatic warning. Disneyworld.com once declined my registration because they claimed it was pornographic. I wrote to them and asked why, and a live person wrote back apologizing. Something had triggered one of their filters, and they wouldn't explain what.

3. That's pretty standard.
As another poster alluded to, they could have just recorded your information and not told you. Your agreement with them (when you signed up for an ID) likely allows them to.

6. thanks..
Still... I'm nonplussed about what triggered a warning like this. Operation Northwoods is an open secret...all over the Internet.. Would that be on an alert list? I guess I'll never know...

7. It's SOP.
Don't lose any sleep over it. The link you posted didn't endorse assassinations, or directly advocate the overthrow of the US government, or any of the nasty things that might truly upset the DHS, FBI or whatever. Some lowly paid Yahoo screener decided your post was threatening, and you were sent a cookie cutter response.

8. I wasn't about to lose sleep :-)
It was more that I was really angry by the message...which I read as a threat to my right to post freely (no obscenity or outrages were in the message)....

If an automatic message had simply said something about not posting because some rule was being broken, fine....(which would have confused, but not angered me). This was a warning that the "authorities" would have my ID and my IP address.... and that message was clearly meant to intimidate. That's just wrong.

13. Yeah, it's rude. I don't blame youfor being angry.
But what can you do, short of complaining or unsubscribing? Yahoo is about as subtle as a truck bomb. They are wrong, but they're also ignorant. And they're idiots. Did I say they're idiots?? :silly:

14. idiots with an agenda?
I cannot imagine what triggered the message.. other than OPERATION NORTHWOODS. There was absolutely nothing else that could have been the alarm. Make you wonder...uh... scratch that. Makes you realize that there are some topics that are not to be brought up. Bushco has spoken.

..since 9/11, thousands of people have been taken into custody with no charges, no right to counsel, nothing. URL's are probably in the next cell.

12. I think there is something really weird going on...
recently - I was emailing some things to people and would include myself as a recipient.

There were several things that were NOT sent - and I did not get a message that they were not sent. (I verified this with one of the people - he didn't get it either).

It tended to be along the lines of:

Bush Administration Lawyers Greenlight Torture

Memo Suggests Intent to Commit War Crimes

----

which was from a widely distributed article.

There was another email where I had to remove the word "Pentagon" from the title before it went through - although if I sent a non-message message with the word "Pentagon" in the title - it did go through.

This seems to be a recent thing - last week or two.

Another person noticed this - as I posted this in the lounge.

I think people should realize there is some serious Big Brother kinds of censorship ratcheting up.

I don't really understand the posters who are being flip about it.

It could seriously restrict the flow of information.

16. it IS serious
Comcast was rejecting all mail sent out by email from the group - afterdowningstreet.com. Yahoo shut down TvNewsLIES more than two years ago - demanded that their server just stop the site... claiming it was UNAMERICAN. Luckily, the editor had backup discs and got another server.

I know for certain that Yahoo shut down Coalition for Free Thought in Media, three separate times. No explanation was given. It's still not permitted to be a Yahoo group.

It's not only the Internet. When TVNL created its LOADED DECK of anti Bush playing cards... no US company would print them. The editor had to outsource to India....which he would have preferred NOT to do...but had no choice.

More is coming. We are in a very bad time, and I agree, this is not a topic to be dealt with lightly. Sometimes the humor is a reprieve from the concern.

18. do some testing ...
try making the exact same post again but leave out the word "Operation" ... if that goes through, try adding back "Op" instead of "Operation" ...

try to prove that the exact phrase "Operation Northwoods" is what's causing the rejection ... you might even try breaking the word "Northwoods" into two words ... or try "Nrthwoods" without the first "o" ... i doubt their screening software is that sophisticated ...

19. I used to use google groups to post stuff...
I saw an incident on the news that didn't quite ring true to me. I looked it up on google groups to see if anyone else had noticed it and saw, to my surprise just one person had. They had immediately been jumped on by a lot of pro * posters.

I decided to redress the balance and post my 2 cents worth but got the message that the server was busy so my message was not posted.

About a week later I got a message very similar to the one you got to my personal main email address, one that I didn't use for the google groups posting, and that was not connected in any way to my registration for that, but that contained info on my name and place of work.

I felt it was clearly meant to intimidate.

20. That makes me believe we're under siege
It always begins slowly.....some action that is perceived to be relatively meaningless.... but I'n not at all convinced it's not calculated and on the rise.

We just learned that lists have been made of all protest groups (and I have to believe web sites and posters) under the TERRORIST provisions of the Patriot Act. We're terrorists, folks, not dissenters.

Long story I won't go into about being contacted - by phone - by someone who pretended to be a journalist writing about the RNC protests. The questions were focused on the possible violence being planned - there ws none, of course - and I was on the phone for nearly TWO HOURS....

I was then, and continue to be convinced, that this was an FBI plant. Someone else I knew got the exact same call....exactly the same ploy about the man writing a story. At that time I was in contact online with the Critical Mass group. I'm sure that's where I was picked up.

Watch your backs, people..
