Limbaugh: "40 people dead, It's not a successful terrorist attack, folks"
Limbaugh downplayed London bombings, claimed "40 people dead" is "not a successful terrorist attack"

http://mediamatters.org/items/200507080004

Nationally syndicated radio host Rush Limbaugh downplayed the death toll from the July 7 London bombings. On that afternoon's broadcast of his radio show, Limbaugh told listeners, "It's like I said -- 40 people dead, 150 seriously wounded, 1,000 wounded out of over 1 million people in that transit tube. It's not a successful terrorist attack, folks."

While Limbaugh apparently does not find the July 7 bombings particularly significant, the The New York Times reported: "The attacks were the worst in British memory since World War II."

From the July 7 broadcast of The Rush Limbaugh Show:

LIMBAUGH: That's, ah, the mayor of London, Ken Livingstone. Very powerful, excellent. And it was such a great contrast to what we're seeing in our own media this morning with the hand-wringing I was speaking about and the "Oh, woe is us" and "Oh, what did we do to cause this?" and "Oh, does this mean we're going to get hit?" and "Oh ..." It's like I said -- 40 people dead, 150 seriously wounded, 1,000 wounded, out of over 1 million people in that transit tube. It's not a successful terrorist attack, folks. They didn't succeed in doing anything, and that's just what you just heard the mayor say: "You don't scare us. You didn't accomplish diddly-squat. We've been through this before, much worse than this. And look at us -- we're in the 20th century, you're still back in the 14th century. Blah, blah, blah."

he is making the classic mistake of underestimating them, because they have not used WMDs yet... and as I keep telling him, they have been very effective, they have changed our way of life... and WMDs, if they have them, (I assume they do, due to the Cesium cores missing in Iraq due to our incompetence), they have not used them due to a minor logistics problem... it is very hard to work with that shit.

that said, unlike Rush, he is havng one of the two typical responses since our gov'ment has not given peopel the tools to deal with this, either deny its a problem or get paralyzsd by fear... for rush... they know this is a failure and bush could not find his way out of a wet paper bag, so it is telling

Edited on Sun Jul-10-05 01:07 AM by FreedomAngel82
I also remember hearing on Bernie Ward's show when the guy who wrote the book "Losing Iraq" was on last month he talked about how there was a 1,000 page document of all that could happen with Iraq written by Colin Powell and Bush ignored it ALL. In that report they told about how there would be theft from stores and how people there have stole tons of materials that could be made into weapons. We've made the world less safe and all for oil and money. Oh and according to the guy EVERYTHING that is happening now (well at that point) in Iraq was planned and pre-warned and Bush did nothing about it. And remember they've been planning this since at least 1996/1997.

9. I tend to agree
Not to belittle the lives that were lost, but presumably the intention of these terrorists was to kill as many people as possible, and with the spectacular and widespread nature of the attacks, killing only 50 people sounds rather unsuccessful.

50 killed is very successful, but the explosions in the tubes could be expected to have been much, much worse, as the enclosed spaces and crowds would magnify the effects.

Bad as it was, it could have been far worse, on the line of the Madrid bombings.

ON EDIT

Don't take this to mean I agree with limpballs. It was a very successful attack. IMO though, hundreds literally ducked the bullet on this one.

The terrorists aren't all that interested in numbers. Their intention is to get themselves recognized and make the British people live in fear of more attacks. It doesn't matter if it's 50 or 5000 people, the TV images of the attacks still scare the living shit out of everybody and that's exactly what they want.

90. It didn't "work" in Spain
The vast majority of Spaniards were against the war from the start and their prime minister Aznar tried to downplay the incident by blaming Basques, which had the effect of turning the people against him even more than they already were. The socialists had withdrawal as a policy long before the attacks, and when they got elected they kept their promise. Spain did the only right thing and withdrew from the war.

and I'm not saying that it is reliable or not, but they were projecting a tight race and close Aznar win. The result did not turn out that way. Are you saying that the bombing (which I doubt anyone really believed was due to Basques ) had no effect on the election results? I'm not saying the feeling wasn't already there to pull out of Iraq, but this, IMHO, helped to solidify the vote against Aznar.

12. Maybe it won't be successful.
What would the attack be for and try to do. Well, if it was successful from (lets say) the US administration point of view, it would be to galvanize support for the war on terror (which is confused with the war on iraq), it would be to keep Blair from thinking about removing the troups from Iraq, it would be to change the G8 agenda from things like global warming and world hunger to the US led war on terror, and it would be to distract attention from all of bushco's problems at home. Lets really hope in this context it is not successful.

Of course it was a successful terorist attack. One death. One maiming is enough to put fear into people.

My sister-in-law was in London Wednesday. She was going to stay and do some shopping yesterday but decided to go back home to France.

Now the odds against her having been hurt or worse yesterday were very slim. But she is now frightened of London, a wonderful city that she has to visit regularly for her job.

So they succeeded in scaring her. Hopefully she will be able to put it behind her.

I live in Oklahoma City. It's been ten years since our attack. But it still depresses me and I have not been within 200 feet of the site nor visited the memorial because it overwhelms me to think of it.

Maybe someday I will go ahead and park my car and walk to it. But not yet.

It's not so much the enormity of these attacks. It's the fear that it puts into everyone.

28. Interesting point
Since Rush has been known to read DU, he can read this.

At the time of the Oklahoma City bombing, I was in a discussion with someone who thought Rush Limbaugh was responsible for that attack. I told that fellow that he was full of baloney.

I still thinks it's loony to blame Limbaugh for that. Obviously, it's not because I think Rush is one of the great thinkers of our time or a positive influence on American society and culture. But let's get a sense of perspective.

A terrorist attack does not have to kill 3000 people to be "successful". Suicide bombings in Israel usually killed far fewer than 40, yet no one argued their "success". Any such attack that instills fear, as they did, is successful.

So did this one. You or I or Rush Limbaugh could be a victim of the next one. We're all the same to Osama.

Mr. Limbaugh's insensitivity is monumental. He owes his listeners and the people of London an apology.

23. The funniest part is that Ken Livingstone would probably pummel Limbaugh
senseless if he had the misfortune to be in the same bar as him - and I'm talking before this outrageous statement. Livingstone's a Red Commie as far as Rush is concerned, but here he is being praised for propaganda purposes. That said, it's telling that Rush feels the need to downplay this attack by calling it unsuccessful. Probably indicates that the attack "polls" very poorly for the right wing, despite their obvious attempt to either deploy it as a political point or brush it off. They're worried, if Limbaugh's downplaying terrorist attacks.

24. Protecting Bush
I think the reason he would say that is an attempt to downplay Bush and Blair's failure to make our countries safer. He knows that our countries, because of Bush's actions, are far less safe now than they were before, and that this attack illustrates that.

To me, he's clearly trying to do damage control.

Just goes to show where their priorities are.

40. What a vile, disgraceful man Rush Limbaugh is. I suspect his reign will be
over soon, there is a limit to how much hate filled garbage masquerading as patriotism that people will put up with (I hope anyway). Here's hoping the judge and jury put him behind bars for his 'doctor shopping'. He is an appalling, hypocritical individual, it just boggles the mind that he even has one radio station willing to broadcast his swill.

63. Military explosives in London bombings...
the damage done by very small charges (10 pounds) according a military expert, shows it was high tech military explosives according to an expert talking to AFP...

If true, it reminds me that exactly that kind of explosives were stolen from teh Al Quaqqa facility in Iraq, due to a major SNAFU from the US forces. The fact that the terrorists gave no indication of activity previous to the bombings, make some experts think that they are of the latest generation, completely unknown from the UK inelligence...

All that might be a sign that there were "last generation" IEDs used in LOndon. So the CIA was right when saying that Iraq would be exporting terror to Europe soon (CIA memo in June) ????

Thank you, George...

EXPLOSIFS D'ORIGINE MILITAIRE

My fiancee has a friend who is spending 5 weeks traveling around Europe. She almost lost it when she couldn't get in contact with her.

When she finally did, her friend had left London the day before to goto France. But yeah her friend was scared shitless to.

I'd say it was successful, let alone the people who WERE there that DIED or were severly injured, and their families.

What a piece of shit Rush is.

83. Retrieving bodies is nightmare for London rescuers
Here ya go, Lush Asshole:

http://cnn.netscape.cnn.com/ns/news/story.jsp?id=2005070911010002129547&dt=20050709110100&w=RTR&coview=

LONDON, July 9 (Reuters) - Retrieval teams working deep underground to recover bodies after the London bomb attacks are battling ghastly conditions that one expert compared to a "foetid drain."

The work was so mentally challenging that each member was receiving special training and support, a leading psychologist said on Saturday.

"What they are in now is essentially a foetid drain with danger, with body parts, with ghastly circumstances. That is a very, very hard duty," James Thompson, senior lecturer in psychology at University College London, told Reuters.

"These are conditions that would defeat ordinary civilians but these are people carefully recruited for their personal stability, given intense training and working in a mutually supportive team," he said.

It was nothing...it was diddly-squat...it was just blah blah blah.

Fucker deserves a fate much worse than these innocents had.

94. Apply his logic to Iraq, you'll see...
Most "terrorist" attacks in iraq rarely kill more then 50 people, so most are not effective.

<Rush> It's like I said -- 5 people dead and 15 wounded out of several million people who live in Iraq. It's not a successful terrorist attack, folks.

So, with all the attacks in Iraq killing less than 50 people a shot, it clearly shows that the insurgency is in it's last throes. If these were real terrorist attacks, they'd be killing hundreds, thousands. We are succeeding in Iraq because the attacks are not killing more than 50 people a shot. Get it?

That would make sense if I microwaved my head for a while and drank 15 gallons of LSD.

How does that idiot figure that up to 1 million could had been killed by the bombs?

In addition what is the cost to those that lost a loved one or suffer because of a loved one that was wounded? It is not just the dead and wounded that suffer the consequences.

As for the 20th century and 14th century bit... as long as they remain with their 14th century mindset they will be a danger. Just as the idiot being a danger not knowing that we are not in the 20th century and falling into the same trap.
