This quote makes me think that Cooper's source wasn't Rove...
A quote from a Yahoo story certainly points to a source that is not Karl Rove.

I'm assuming this source has a soul, and felt bad about Cooper going to jail for protecting him. Rove has no conscience, nor a soul. He would prefer that someone fall on a sword for him. There's no way Karl Rove would tell Cooper that it was ok to disclose.

That's what I'm guessing. Anyone else feel the same way?

Quote from Yahoo story:
"I went to bed ready to accept the sanctions" for not testifying, Cooper said. But he told the judge that not long before his early afternoon appearance, he had received "in somewhat dramatic fashion" a direct personal communication from his source freeing him from his commitment to keep the source's identity secret.

16. I don't even read it that way
I read that as the call from Rove or whomever coming at a dramatic moment for Cooper - that interpretation seems most consistent with the rest of his comments, or at least from my perspective.

2. Yeah, that part throws a monkey wrench into the whole story
I don't know what to believe. Guess we'll just have to wait it out and see what develops. I still think Novak knows everything, and I wish there were some legal way to force him to spill the beans.

3. What, sky-writing? a crow with a message wrapped around his foot?
a message written in lipstick on his bathroom mirror? a vial with a message found in his cereal bowl? Batman delivered it?

Wonder what happened?

9. A troupe of Shakespearean actors recited it in Elizabethan English?
Just a thought.

4. There could be a more pragmatic reason.
There was already a leak about the leak. It had become common knowledge it was Rove.

However, there's a second source, as well -- I believe Novak cited two sources. And, Miller has another source she's protecting. I think Rove's signed waiver did it for Cooper, but not for Miller, because she's got another source to protect.

7. I am utterly confused by this entire story
I don't know why the White House would risk so much by doing something so petty. They seem savvier than that. This is something LBJ or Nixon would pull.

I really doubt Rove is personally calling reporters helter skelter. If he was behind this, I would certainly think there would be some layers of protection. I assume he read The Godfather.

I'm still not 100 percent clear on how Novak seems to be skating; I suppose he pleaded the Fifth.

And I don't know why this source is suddenly granting permission for someone to potentially send him up the river.

10. Keep it simple . . .
Cooper resists testifying and appeals all the way to SCOTUS . . .
Cooper resists testifying and Time turns over his emails . . .
Cooper resists testifying and the prosecutor says he has to, the Time disclosures are not sufficient . . .
Cooper resists testifying and the judge is about to sentence him . . .
Cooper now wants to avoid jail but has no arrows left in his quiver. The problem is, he's spent months making himself out as some kind of hero for resisting, and you can't just back away from such a "principled stand."
My guess? He made up the whole "dramatic communication" to save face. Has anyone asked to see this communication, or are they just taking Cooper's word for it? Also, the only one who can call Cooper on his B/S is the leaker himself.

11. Geoff, excellent thought!
That makes more sense than any other explanation I've heard.
It does seem awfully convenient that right at the very last moment - after all other possibilities are exhausted - a dramatic message comes to the rescue!

12. That makes sense
I was thinking about this too. Maybe it is a bluff to save face. Like, "yeah, it's okay to tell now." That might come as a surprise to the leaker, but what difference does it make.

Or, maybe there are two sources.

Or, maybe Bush ordered the leaker to take the fall.

Anyway, it is not very honorable to protect the leaker. That person committed a crime. Reporters do not need to protect criminals.

13. Perhaps this person only sent the permission to Cooper and
not the others so that it makes it seem that it couldn't be Rove, because then they would've all gotten the same missive, in an attempt to confuse matters to buy time against speculation--time to formulate a scapegoat...

14. Exactly my thoughts. And I don't believe Miller would be protecting Rove!
Another theory is if Rove told Cooper to disclose why is Miller going to jail if her source was Rove. Dosen't make sense any of it!

19. Just don't. I think it is someone higher.
And I don't think her source is the same as Cooper. That is why she didn't get a waiver.

18. Speaking of Rove,he was supposed to be on an NPR talk show, but isn't.
Which might make it seem like he has something to hide.Friday morning on her NPR show,Diane Rehm announced that Rove told her he'd be a guest on her show sometime this week.Of course, the Lawrence O'Donnell revelation on the McGlaughlin Group aired on Friday night. The Rehm show filled in the last space on this week's schedule on their webpage last night, which was today at 10 AM.I was waiting to see if it would be Rove. It's not.
