The term limit debate is a moot point and possibly a diversion.
Anyone who thinks George W. Bush is the mastermind behind the NeoCon Fascist Cabal (NFC: Also known as PNAC & Friends) please raise your hand. Now take that hand and give yourself a swift slap across the cheek to wake up. Do it gently though, I'm not really into violence. ;)

Here is the situation:

1. It doesn't matter if GWB can run again in 2008 or not. He is expendable and at this point may very well be a liability. The NFC will find someone else to front for them if they don't run the Shrub.

2. Who counts the vote controls the outcome and the Republicans are most definitely in control of the vote count. With a little bit of, gerrymandering, voter disenfranchisement and vote suppression thrown in for good measure.

3. As long as corporations, including corporate media, have the privileges of individuals and none of the responsibility they will be complicit in points 1 & 2 either consciously or subconsciously.

Until we are free of the influence of the NFC, are confident in a fair and open election process and hold corporations accountable for their behavior, how many times a single individual can keep running for President is completely immaterial.

If you feel inclined to contact anyone about the proposal to eradicate the 22nd Amendment please let them know that you will not be distracted from the task at hand. Reclaiming the people's rightful power in a representative democracy.

1. It'll never happen.
Repealing the 22nd Amendment, I mean.

The Founding Fathers purposely made it very difficult to amend the Constitution. If memory serves, it takes 3/4 of the state legislatures to make it happen. And certainly there's not that much support for repealing the 22nd Amendment.

Boy George will go back to the oblivion he deserves, in 2008, if not before.

2. I don't think it will happen either, but it doesn't matter.
The debate about it is a smokescreen.

On the other hand, we've already seen evidence that state legislatures can be controlled. *cough* Florida. It would take 2/3 of the states I think. Is that 34? I'm not a mathematician. ;)

5. Easy game plan
Late 2007/early 2008 there'll be a massive terrorist attack on mainland US.

The opportunity will suddenly appear for these nut cases to talk about security and stability, there'll be a lot of talk about a constitutional crisis. The solution that they will propose to counter this will be to allow a president to stay in office for more than 2 terms. Obviously this will piss off a huge number of people and a new compromise solution will appear that will extend the presidential term from 4 years to 6 or 8.

The latter solution will keep * in power until 2010 or 2012 (by which time a crack medical team will have finished deflating Jeb's head down to a human size). They'll also manage to persuade people that this compromise solution is a two party idea that has everyone's full support.

With the idea of the two party support and the continued threat of more terrorist attacks they'll find the support from the states that they need.

And no one in the media will ever point out that since two terrorist attacks on US soil had occurred under his presidency * might not be the best option for security.

6. I agree Ikri
The right wingers are too entrenched and intoxicated with power to just put it up for grabs in 2008. They need a plan to keep power and finish the job of turing the US into a dictatorship. Much like a frog in slowly heating water will not fight, US citizens won't know whats happening until its too late. Its up to us to get the word out: Republicans are turning the US into old Iraq. Irony intended. Only a matter of time before we have mass graves of our own. Whats truly frightning is the lengths these unscrupulous bastards will go to ensure their apocalyptic vision turns into reality. We were discussing the possible use of Ugandan mercenaries to help keep the peace turning this subtle transition in this thread http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=1853199#1854059>here We must get the message out to the people, that the only sane choice to prevent such a future is the DNC. Whats obvious to us (Repukes are war mongering Saddamites) must be made painfully obvious to the rest of the US and the world.
