CIA was the real Deep Throat
Edited on Sun Jun-05-05 03:58 PM by EVDebs
"Good God ! Hunt shouted before slamming down the phone. I called the president of the public relations firm, Robert Bennett, now a Republican US senator from Utah. 'I guess its no secret that Howard was with the CIA', Bennett said blandly".

From Bob Woodward's recent Washington Post piece on the outing of Deep Throat, W. Mark Felt. I could say that what Woodward IS keeping secret today is the extent of intelligence sources he utilized in breaking Watergate, and is still keeping under wraps today.

What Woodward doesn't say is that the p.r. firm, Mullen & Co. was a CIA front company, along with Bennett himself's employment by the CIA. See

"I have told Woodward everything I know about the Watergate case, except the Mullen Company's tie to the CIA."--Robert F. Bennett, testifying before House Special Committee on Intelligence, July 2, 1974

Page 59 of Crimes of Patriots: A True Tale of Dope, Dirty Money, and the CIA by Jonathan Kwitny :

“Alexander Butterfield, a former Asian-intelligence officer, had some helpful advice for a reporter asking questions about Bernie Houghton. In 1973, Butterfield had attained instant celebrity by revealing to Congress and the world that Richard Nixon’s Watergate conversations were secretly taped in the Oval Office. (Little if anything was made of the curious circumstance that a career intelligence operative had played such a pivotal role in the downfall of a president.)”

Combine the role of Robert F. Bennett of the Mullen Co CIA-front p.r. firm, and the fact that Bennett hid the CIA’s and his role in that; the fact that the burglary was run by the CIA’s McCord and the Cubans, and done at Gordon Strachan’s urging after an uneventful first breakin, and voila.

And Ben Bradlee's naval intelligence bio

along with Woodward's naval intelligence bio

would make you think the WashPost had a naval intelligence hiring preference !

So, why all the intelligence connections in Watergate if the CIA wasn't working behind the scenes in keeping it going ? They should be commended in getting rid of Nixon...now, if they could just do something similar today, just think how grateful the nation would be !

Also, the funniest thing, Woodward quotes Felt as saying "Newspapers didn't do in-depth work and rarely got to the bottom of events". Boy, did Felt ever hit the nail on the head with that one ! I get the feeling Woodward and Bradlee are laughing at us right now....

for a copy of an email sent by Jim Hougan, author of Secret Agenda, who names Robert Bennett as the more likely Deep Throat, but Woodward may be still defending him by putting the impostor Felt out front in order to protect the CIA !
