First Step To Impeach Bush
Today on Air America they were talking about this. Saying they intend to start an impeachment process but they first need as many people as possible to sign this petition for Bush to fully disclose information about the Downey Street Memo.

Lets get on all over this DU if you haven't already. This could be our chance to impeach this bastard.

12. Here is an interview from Raw Story

Veteran Democrat raises worries on civil liberties, 2002 Iraq attack plan

By Larisa Alexandrovna and John Byrne | RAW STORY

In an interview with RAW STORY, Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) raised concerns about a document which suggests President Bush may have knowingly misled the country into war and expressed serious worries about the ebbing of civil liberties.

“There’s a dictatorial flavor that comes into this matter,” Conyers said, speaking of efforts of the current Bush Administration. “This chipping away from what we thought we had and what was in stone: the Civil Rights Act, the Voter Rights Act, the ability of states to process their own judicial cases without federal intervention—all of these things mean we’re not where we were; we’re slipping back and what we’re slipping back into in the cumulative sense is something a little bit scary.”

>>>snip

Conyers says some have called upon him to push for impeachment, but he avoided the term in conversation with RAW STORY. The congressman was a member of the Judiciary Committee in its 1974 hearings on the Nixon’s impeachment; he suggested that details of the Iraq deal might trickle out as they did with Watergate under President Nixon.

>>>snip

On the issue of civil liberties, RAW STORY raised a question some readers have asked, whether the congressman thought it was a reach to imagine the turn by the current Administration to infringe about personal privacy could result in something as drastic as martial law.

“I’m not so sure that there’s a lot of reaching necessary,” he remarked. “In totality, we’re moving into a different kind of country under different kind of law. For a president who has won each of his two elections by two states and each time the state that provided him with the margin had the most violations and irregularities of voting procedure of any other state in each election – obviously Florida and Ohio – he’s acting as if he had a mandate."

This is from the interview that was first published on Raw Story. I can't find the link, but here is a link to my post in ER&D: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=203&topic_id=372264

56. Conyers' attack is 2-fold. He's asking for information that Bush won't
want to give, and that could trigger an investigation by Congress as a whole. If Bush doesn't give the info, then he's obstructing justice, and that's an impeachable offense.

If Bush does give the info, and it confirms the Downing St. Memo, then that also is and impeachable offense.

THE MEMORANDUM
The memo: Boston constitutional lawyer seeks Resolution of Inquiry on Iraq
RAW STORY

MEMORANDUM
To: Rep. John Conyers, Jr.
From: John C. Bonifaz
Date: May 22, 2005
RE: The President’s Impeachable Offenses

The recent release of the Downing Street Memo provides new and compelling evidence that the President of the United States has been actively engaged in a conspiracy to deceive and mislead the United States Congress and the American people about the basis for going to war against Iraq. If true, such conduct constitutes a High Crime under Article II, Section 4 of the United States Constitution: “The President, Vice President, and all civil officers of the United States shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.”

In light of the emergence of the Downing Street Memo, Members of Congress should introduce a Resolution of Inquiry directing the House Judiciary Committee to launch a formal investigation into whether sufficient grounds exist for the House of Representatives to exercise its constitutional power to impeach George W. Bush, President of the United States.

The Downing Street Memo

On May 1, 2005, The Sunday Times of London published the Downing Street Memo. The document, marked “Secret and strictly personal – UK eyes only,” consists of the official minutes of a briefing by Richard Dearlove, then-director of Britain’s CIA equivalent, MI-6, to British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his top national security officials. Dearlove, having just returned from meetings with high U.S. Government officials in Washington, reported to Blair and members of his Cabinet on the Bush administration’s plans to start a preemptive war against Iraq..........

..........The writer is an attorney in Boston specializing in constitutional litigation. In February and March 2003, John C. Bonifaz served as lead counsel for a coalition of United States soldiers, parents of U.S. soldiers, and Members of Congress (led by Representatives John Conyers, Jr. and Dennis Kucinich) in a federal lawsuit challenging President George W. Bush’s authority to wage war against Iraq absent a congressional declaration of war or equivalent action. Bonifaz is the author of Warrior-King: The Case for Impeaching George W. Bush (NationBooks-NY, 2004, foreword by Rep. John Conyers, Jr.), which chronicles that case and its meaning for the United States Constitution.

9. What is the purpose of this?
President Cheney?

Bush is incredibly weak politically. He has absolutely no political capital. Bolton is floundering in the Senate. Social security is not going to happen. Everybody and their mother knows that Bush was barely reelected in wartime and that it sure wasn't on the virtues of his policy agenda. Let's just have him finish out his pathetic excuse for a term, focus on regaining the Senate in 2006 and making headway in the House.

I can't do that. How can you? You sound like you are in danger of being worn out, like "whats the purpose?" is your message. I hope I'm wrong, but this is exactly why * is getting away with so much. People are overwhelmed, feeling like they are only one voice, what good can one person do...kind of thing. Well, one plus one plus one plus one, and so on = a great many. Be part of something, and you will no longer be "just one".

on edit: I agree we MUST act on 2006... DEFINETELY, but we MUST do both. We are capable.

17. If we get an impeachment going against Bush...
it could just as well bring down Cheney too. I'm betting if an investigation goes into Bush, there will be a lot of things being brought out in the open that expose Cheney for the criminal he is too (Haliburton info, energy meeting notes, etc.). Agnew got pushed out before Nixon resigned too.

The key is getting a compelling case in front of the American people that *demands* action by the congress to act. That will be tough in this climate where the media is controlled and so is our government, but I don't think it's impossible. Getting a petition to help Conyers certainly helps show public sentiment, but we need more than that to get an impeachment. We need some sort of story break with facts that cannot be denied. Perhaps Sibel Edmonds, Valerie Plame, Gannon investigations, etc. can help here. But we need some high powered journalist or someone else that can help with investigating those situations to get the public on informed and on board.

I'm guessing we might need a lot of help from agencies such as the BBC, CBC or other nearby news agencies/companies which might be more immune from fascist control by our current regime.

31. When we talk of impeaching Bush we mean this admin since they are all
heavily implicated at multiple levels. Unlike Nixon and Clinton where there were only a handful of close aides and foot soldiers this particular circumstance due to the mass culpability at play would lead to many other officials and corporate heads at the least losing jobs. Fines and jailtime could actually be brought forth if even half of the stuff that we've scene on the internet turns out to be provably true.

Other than that you're right about focus on '06, you'd also be right about election reform, media bias, and a host of very very worthy and needy causes. Pick one or more and do what you can.

32. Yes, his entire cabinet can be impeached...
Every damn one of them. We don't want any of them left in power.

And you're right, unlike Nixon and Clinton, it was just a small handful of close aides in those cases.

There are so many people involved in this case. It's like a big corrupt corporate elite. Something called Racketeering.

Certain members of Congress, federal agents, corporate CEO's, etc. are all implicated in these conspiracies.

With Watergate, it started out with a small group of people getting indicted and then the whole thing started to unravel.

And like I said a few posts below earlier, if Bush knows he's nailed and he has no way out, he might just resign like Tricky Dick to avoid an impeachment trial in the Senate.

20. We can legally force the Congress to impeach! Here's how...
www.recallthecongress.com

>>>>snip

To impeach George Bush for war crimes and covertly implementing PNAC, we have to get a handle on our congress men and women.

This website is created to organize local state efforts to petition the Secretary of State or other official of each state in which laws have been established for the recall process of public officials. There are 26 states in which such laws have been established leaving 24 states in which an effort is required to petition the state legislature for enactment of such a law or alternatively where the initiative has been made law to use that vehicle to bring each state of the nation into a parity of power of its citizens to control the Federal government.

http://recallthecongress.com/further_explanation_of_the_right.htm

>>>>snip

FURTHER EXPLANATION OF THE RIGHT OF RECALL

( For the less legally Minded )

The only assurance to prevent the hijacking of the country in the future is for Americans to assert the power of recall of congress members who refuse to abide by the Constitution and the will of the masses of the people in their inept support of a government gone awry.

Contrary to myth, Congress people can be recalled by their constituents. Any power not enumerated in the Constitution is reserved to the people. Recall is one of those powers.

In those states where there is a law establishing procedure to invoke the recall, it is available to the people to initiate it. In those
states where it is not procedurally established by law, the local state legislatures need to establish a procedural law whereby the people_can initiate it. It has nothing to do with local legislators demanding something of D.C.

As an alternative to a recall procedure against a Congressman, any member of congress can make a private unilateral employment contract with his constituents to pledge a certain conduct with penalties ( a court ordered enforcement of the terms of the breach of contract or fired from job )

We the people can do it. You can help!

Objectives of We the People

To kick George W. Bush out of office, send him packing to Crawford Texas and to seek his future trial for war crimes in the docks of the International Court of Criminal Justice. To this add Dick Cheney and his rogue companions.
That We the People gain control over the Senate and House of Representatives whereby they are bound to perform according to their commitments to We the People or get booted out of office by state court upon complaint of We the People.
To teach the President and the Congress that We the People own America and the government and that every person in each of those entities is in our employ and subject to our termination by way of our reserved electoral right of recall.
To establish that the right of the people to recall members of the US Senate or the House of Representatives is a right not prohibited within the Constitution and is thus reserved to the electors of the States contrary to common myth.
To firmly establish the right of We the People to veto any acts of the Congress within 48 hours of passage which veto is final and cannot be overridden by the Congress.
To establish by use of the recall that We the People are the backbone of our government, not its vassals and that the government must respond to the will of We the People.
Not the last and not the least is that we must re-establish fiscal responsibility to this nation which is heading for bankruptcy under the present administration with the aid and assistance of our congressional delegates.

We the people of the United States

face the greatest challenge in the history of our country

It is greater than the Revolutionary war by which our country was given birth. It is greater than the Civil war which preserved the union.

It is greater than World War II which was waged to eliminate the evils of fascism from the earth. It is unprecedented in world history!

It is indeed a rebirth of fascism in our time in our own country by those who have hijacked the government from their seat in the Administration and by their accomplices within the Congress along with all other inept members of the Congress who have allowed this tragedy to come upon us. Most of these are descendants of fathers who fought and some who died in World War II to free the world of fascism. Don’t know what PNAC is? Most Americans don’t. Read up on it http://www.crisispapers.org/Editorials/PNAC-Primer.htm

How did it happen? By lies and deception and by placing the Nation under a state of fear. But not by accident. It was a well orchestrated event including 9/11 and all the suspicions surrounding it. For 9/11 was a needed event ( As stated by the paper itself) ( Sin of Omission) to implement the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) and first kicked into gear by the ill-informed interference of the US Supreme Court in a States Right matter of the election fraud in Florida in 2000. That interference resulted in an illegal electoral college vote for George W. Bush.

It was further encouraged in 2004 by a conspiracy of silence among members of the Congress on both sides of the aisle to not speak of fascism or PNAC during the election campaign which they knew or must have known was taking over America. Members of Congress who knew and were silent are guilty of treason and high crimes against the country. If they didn’t know they are inept and should be kicked out of their offices as quickly as possible. We don’t need a rubber stamp congress to the further the evil empire builder George W. Bush.

I won’t go into the parallels between September 11, 2001 and February 27,1933 when Germany began to lose its democracy and the Third Reich fascist government began. Thom Hartman has done an excellent job of that. Thom Hartman | When Democracy Failed - 2005: The Warnings of History http://www.commondreams.org/views05/0222-22.htm

We cannot allow George Bush and company to entrench our country any deeper into the un-godly agenda of PNAC. Every American needs to stand up, listen, read and learn what is going on then decide to do something positive about it. I have suggested an:

American Revolution 2005

It needs to be done beginning now and by our use of the powers vested in WE the People
Volunteers needed in all 50 states. 21. It might be a mistake to concentrate on impeachment...
...The first step should be a push for investigations and hearings. It's important to remember that this is the most secretive, corrupt executive branch in American history and they seem to think they have a right to do anything they want during a 'time of war'.

They have threatened and intimidated anyone that even suggests that they testify under oath or participate in investigations or hearings.

The problem seems to be that there aren't enough DEMOCRATS joining with Conyers and it makes it look like those calling for accountability are simply 'partisans' or conspiracy nuts. This effort won't be successful unless more high-profile Dems add their voices. Putting names on petitions will mean nothing in the long run. The fascists in control don't care what you think.

25. Read Conyers letter, he asks for Bush to respond to 5 questions
around the DSM (Downing Street Memo). Impeachment is mentioned peripherally.

He IS laying the groundwork with investigation by asking what did you know and when did you know it. If the president continues to resist answering some simple questions this will surely be a big issue in 2006 and 2008.

27. Another thing I'm wondering about...
If he knows he's going to be impeached, maybe he'll just pull a Nixon and resign to avoid a trial in the Senate. It's something to think about.

39. My email to John Conyers...

Hi Rep. Conyers,

I heard you've had a lot of people calling on you for the impeachment of President George W. Bush and other civil officers.

Somebody I talked to online said back in February they got an email from their Rep (Alcee Hastings) and he said some members of Congress were exploring impeachment.

From what I've seen, it looks like you're going to approach this like Watergate. Good luck. I know you were involved in that process and you know how the whole thing works.

I hope these criminals get what they deserve and get it soon. Impeachment is an imperative to defending our constitution and holding leaders accountable.

Thank you and take care,

44. At the least papers should be filed
In 10 to 20 years, when all Bush Inc.'s
crimes are uncovered, people will wonder
why at least impeachment papers weren't filed.

Sorry for doing a drive-by posting guys/gals. But lately I've been quite inundated with work in the political action and new education committee in my union.

One good thing about that though; I've been able to get 20 people so far to sign the petition.. :)

Anyway, my thoughts on this is: Even if we end-up not being able to impeach Bushco because of the Republican majority Congress. I feel that it will at least serve two positive consequences - and that is:

  1. It will likely force the news media from no longer blacking-out this smoking gun evidence of Bush's premeditative plans to invade and occupy a country for ulterior reasons.

  2. It will serve as a big spot-light on the Bush administration and the Republicans in general. And just like the cockroaches they are, they don't like the light being shined upon them, so they'll go scurrying into the darkness. And with such a spot-light, the only darkness may end-up being no more of this unacceptable non-sense we've been seeing from them.

But I sure do hope this actually works in removing Bush, and that it makes it as disgraceful for him as possible.

61. Signing is the first step - becoming a pain in the ass to your favorite...
...Corporate Media Whore is the second one, and pestering your elected officials about this is third.

Let's go people! It's a three-day weekend - you have 10 minutes for democracy, don't you??

62. Done! But priorities should be: 1) paper ballots/hand counts,
2) THEN take back senate/house in 2006

3) AND THEN, Impeachment/imprisonment

How sweet that would be!
