Need an opinion!
The township democrats where I live will be in the memorial day parade. Thought to support the troops it would be a good idea to make copies of the Downing Street memo to hand out to the crowd. What opinions do any of you have on this idea?

2. Do It!
Just add a disclaimer of your own to the end saying that "in no way should this be misconstrued to mean that I do not support our military servicemen and women. What you DO NOT support is the reasons for which they are unnecessarily dying." Then no one can attack you. In fact, I bet you might find a fair # of veterans at your memorial day services that agree with you.

6. To be perfectly honest, as the daughter of a vet, I don't like it.

Please leave the politics at home as much as possible.

Far too many have already forgotten what Memorial Day is for.

Edit: I can anticipate the arguments against my position, so I'll try to deal with it now.

Pay your respects only. I wouldn't want to see people handing these things out at the Vet's Cemetary while I am remembering my father.

If it could possibly offend even one member of one vet's family--DON'T.

It would also put your local Dems in a VERY negative light.

7. How so? By calling out this war for the lie that it is?
Edited on Fri May-27-05 06:16 PM by Carolab
How does that run contrary to military support?

No one wants their loved ones to go and die for lies. Sacrifice like that should stop. Ask the Military Families Speak Out http://www.mfso.org/.

8. While I understand your point, I think this is the wrong place

for politicking.

I'm on the same side as you, but I'm thinking of decorum only.

Imagine the Republicans doing something similar and see if you can't see it from my POV.

Edit: I'm pretty sure I'm going to be in the minority here, but oh, well.

9. I get your point too but how is it "politicking" to work to end the war?
Edited on Fri May-27-05 06:28 PM by Carolab
On edit: If we remain mute, how do we hope to stop it?

The majority of people in this country don't believe in this war anymore. And that includes many, many military personnel and their families. It's patriotic, if not politic.

11. I've stated my opinion and am sticking by it. I know it'll be unpopular.
I think it just isn't the place, and it will not look good for the local Dems.

I want us out of Iraq, I want the memo publicized as much as possible, but this is the wrong time and place, IMHO, and I doubt very greatly anything will change my mind.

We differ on this, and I can respect that.
