Sen. George Allen (R-VA): "Lieberman will be with us on Bolton"
Edited on Tue May-24-05 04:35 PM by Bush_Eats_Beef
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7967386/

With an incentive to change the topic and try to regain his tactical initiative, Frist was poised Tuesday to bring the nomination of John Bolton, Bush’s choice to be ambassador to the United Nations, to the floor for debate and a vote as early as Wednesday. This would spark another no-holds-battle with Democrats who have hinted they will filibuster that nomination as well.

But Allen was upbeat on Bolton: “Sen. (Joseph) Lieberman (of Connecticut) will be with us on Bolton … We’ll pick up some Democrats.”

And at least one Senate power broker was trying Tuesday to parlay any good feeling that lingered after the deal on judges to get legislation passed.

“There may be a certain sense of euphoria around the Senate; it’ll probably last as much as 24 or 48 hours,” said Judiciary Committee chairman Sen. Arlen Specter, R- Pa. He will try to get his committee to approve the asbestos reform litigation bill by Friday.

23. That's My Take, Too
As far as I'm aware, we're safe until Senator Boxer releases the hold. The last public statement which she made to that effect was after the committee vote which sent the matter to the floor without an endorsement. In that, she said that she would stall the process until at least after the Memorial Day recess.

Last night, after the nuclear option was averted, I sent her an email insisting that she not allow confirmation of Bolton to be a gift to the right for compromising on the filibuster. As of today, rejecting his nomination is the top item on her PAC homepage

http://www.barbaraboxer.com

I strongly recommend that you send her an email like mine via:

http://boxer.senate.gov/contact/webform.cfm

Tell her that her attempts to bog down the process of voting on Bolton should not be tied in any way to the filibuster compromise.

25. from BB site
http://www.barbaraboxer.com/news?id=0009

"...Boxer's move, which the Republican Senate majority could overturn by getting 51 votes in favor of a motion to proceed despite her hold, could further raise the partisan temperature in a body already fighting over Republican efforts to curb the Democratic minority's power to filibuster Bush's judicial nominees.

Boxer and the other Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said the Bush administration had failed to turn over documents in three areas: notes and drafts of a Bolton speech on Syria's military capabilities, private business records of Bolton's assistant Mathew Friedman and information from the National Security Agency and other spy services about whether Bolton tried to get the names of American officials whose communications were intercepted.

"These records may show something, or nothing,'' Boxer said.

Boxer said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the White House have promised complete cooperation with the committee, but so far they haven't delivered...."

Here it is from Steve Clemens:

"Senator Boxer has agreed to remove her "hold" on Bolton as Frist can remove the hold with a "motion to proceed" which requires only a simple majority to win."

5. Virginia.
"You've got to scrape that shit right off your shoes."

--last line of the chorus of "Sweet Virginia" by the Rolling Stones

Allen kinda fits with Georgia, but he's the junior fascist from Virginia.

And I appreciate this fair warning you've given us on Lieberman & I will cross my liberal ten fingers and hope it's not true.

We could sure use him in the Senate today instead of:

Allen

vitter
Allard
mcConnell
Hutchison
Cornyn

etc. -- on down the baneful list of lunatics.

Nice to meet you on DU.

9. Allen is from Virginia, not Georgia & he's a jerk
who wants to be president although he reached his level of incompetence before he ever became a loser governor of Virginia.

I may not always agree with Senator Warner, but at least he is qualified and he is a statesman. Allen is an opportunist who has leveraged his father's fame as coach of the Redskins.

17. Well, Voinovich sure wont and it looks like he is urging others to join
him.

"In the letter, Mr. Voinovich said that while he had been "hesitant to push my views on my colleagues" during his years in the Senate, he felt "compelled to share my deep concerns" about Mr. Bolton's nomination.

"In these dangerous times, we cannot afford to put at risk our nation's ability to successfully wage and win the war on terror with a controversial and ineffective ambassador to the United Nations," Mr. Voinovich wrote. He urged colleagues to "put aside our partisan agenda and let our consciences and our shared commitment to our nation's best interests guide us."'

change the one above)

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/24/politics/24cnd-bolton.html

-snip-
The letter from Senator George R. Voinovich was sent to all senators, but it was aimed particularly at fellow Republicans in a chamber in which the party holds a 55-44 majority (with one independent). At least five Republicans would have to join Mr. Voinovich in opposing Mr. Bolton if the nomination were to be defeated.

In the letter, Mr.

He urged colleagues to "put aside our partisan agenda and let our consciences and our shared commitment to our nation's best interests guide us."

The White House remains strongly in favor of Mr. Bolton's nomination, and it is unusual for a Republican to break ranks so publicly by circulating a letter opposed to a Republican president's agenda. A copy of Mr. Voinovich's letter, dated May 23 but not circulated until Tuesday, was provided by a Senate Democratic aide opposed to Mr. Bolton.

40. It looks like he may be changing the minds of some Dems or stiffening
their spines. Hopefully he is influencing some of the moderate or wavering Republicans. I'd love to see Bolton actually lose in an "up and down" vote.

"There are rumors that even Senators Lieberman, Ben Nelson, Mark Pryor and Mary Landrieu are reconsidering their semi-positive leanings on Bolton."

28. Bolton will pass unless we filibuster
And I am unsure we are ready for another bare knuckle brawl on the senate floor. My sense is Reid will allow an up or down vote and Bolton will get around 55 votes (including a couple dems). So sad I may have to drown myself in tequila on Friday.

Really. What the hell is the point off all this crap if you can't control your own caucus, Sen. Reid??
