Stem Cell research debated; Bush threatens veto; GOP in a mad scramble...
...to throw a bone to their fundy base?

So they tried but couldn't give them Schiavo... They tried but couldn't give them the nuke option... Here's the next Republican 'feed the fundies' fiasco coming soon to a theater near you:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Framing the House debate over stem cell research in stark moral terms, a GOP leader on Tuesday said a bill to permit federal funding for such studies would dismember "living human beings." Other lawmakers argued it was wrong to withhold money for research that might cure disease.

House Majority Leader Tom Delay of Texas, known for enforcing discipline on Republican ranks, faced opposition from within his own party over his stance on the issue. DeLay said the debate was "a necessary and important step in our national conversation about the kind of people we will be, in a world of ever more promising and ever more unnerving medical technology."

The bill he opposes and which President Bush has threatened to veto would lift Bush's 2001 ban on new federally funded research on embryonic stem cells, a process that requires the destruction of human embryos.

Voting yes would amount to a "vote to fund with taxpayer dollars the dismemberment of living, distinct human beings for the purposes of medical experimentation," DeLay said Tuesday, opening debate on the bill.

2. Follow the Money
DeLay and his goons will support stem cell funding when the medical community antes up enough $$$$$$$$$ to elect republicans. This is another power grab.

5. Bush cares more about embryo's than he does about soldiers
We need to push this issue to continue to divide the republicans.

6. Somebody show DeLay a picture of a 4 day old
embryo. Cells, no little head, no little body, NOTHING to "dismember". What will they be saying next? Go back to medieval thinking when they said each sperm was a "littler person". lol

7. First thing this morning, DUH-Lay called those cells...
"children!"

Here is a site of concerned scientists who will send a fax in support of the embryonic stem cell research bill:

10. Remember this song from "Monty Python's Meaning of Life?"
DAD:
There are Jews in the world.
There are Buddhists.
There are Hindus and Mormons, and then
There are those that follow Mohammed, but
I've never been one of them.

I'm a Roman Catholic,
And have been since before I was born,
And the one thing they say about Catholics is:
They'll take you as soon as you're warm.

You don't have to be a six-footer.
You don't have to have a great brain.
You don't have to have any clothes on. You're
A Catholic the moment Dad came,

Because

Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

CHILDREN:
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

9. Aren't the embryos slated to be destroyed REGARDLESS?
Aren't these stem cells coming from frozen embryos at fertility clinics that would have been destroyed anyway? Please clarify if I'm wrong.

So what does DeLay plan to do? Pass a law that makes it illegal for these fertility specialists to destroy any embryos they've had in storage? I don't see how they could make this arguement without imposing such a restriction on these clinics.

12. Yes. And any embryos used for research would be donated...
with informed consent.

I'm amazed at the hypocrisy of allowing fertility clinics to create embryos knowing that there will be "leftovers" that will end up in the trash, but preventing the embryos from being used to find cures because it's "unethical."
