The "compromise" in street terms:
Edited on Tue May-24-05 11:12 AM by tgnyc
Mugger: If you have the guts to pull a gun on me, I'll probably get nervous and misfire in my attempt to rob you. Otherwise, if you give me $15 of the $25 in your wallet today, I promise not to try to shoot you and take the full $25. But in the likely event that I run into you again in the near future, I'll probably still try to shoot you and take everything you have that day. Except in some extraordinary circumstance, like you really, really need to keep your money, or something like that.

Victim: What a great day!

3. The same metaphor could be applied to all compromises ever.
And it still doesn't explain why it's better to get shot now.

5. Not all compromises, LZ
If, for example, the Republicans had agreed to withdraw the candidacies of the particular controversial judges and start over, in other words, if they had "compromised" by actually giving up something they had already done (i.e. nominating the rightwing loons) instead of simply promising not to do something illegal (getting rid of the filibuster) in the future, such a compromise would not have been akin to a mugging.

When will the "moderates" understand that "moderation" is a terrible tactic when dealing with rabid bullies?

12. Sort of like
well, how about they just chop off his legs today so he can lie there bleeding, and tomorrow maybe his arms--just enough to stay alive but increasingly debilitated...

Better to have a neutered opposition party than to completely kill it off and have a capable opponent take his place.

4. The other (nuclear) option:
I'll take your $25 and I'll meet you at the bank tomorrow where you will sign over your entire account to me. Go ahead and try to turn me in to the police, we own them.

7. We will lose big in 06 becasue of this
I think the dems completely fucked up with this one. If we allowed them to go through with this it would have been over for the republicans in 06. I know this because of the senate poll numbers that came out the other day. Now instead of us looking like the good guys I see people like McCain going on CNN saying the Dems were absuing the fillibuster so we stopped those evil democrats. This is absolutely unbelievable.

14. Oh, we have a gun now too
I see. How nice.

You've apparently never been mugged. I'm looking at a 55-45 Senate, which means the mugger has his gun on you, and your gun is still holstered.

20. I have been mugged.
Also, not all of the 55 were down with the mugger this time. On the contrary, the numbers were such that both mugger and victim were pretty much equally ready to fire.

16. Yes, perhaps ...
but as an extension: If you "Shoot Me" perhaps my children (future generations) will see you for the monster that you are (right wing republicans). They will have time to run, regroup, and in the future, bring forth reinforcements to clean up our streets, throw out the corrupt Congressional Representatives - DINOs INCLUDED!. Huh?

23. We were keeping with the "mugger" scenario ...
My point in clear terms: It takes Senators with backbones to take a firm stand and risk not being re-elected due to a Roverian attack. Reid and the other Democratic leadership within the Senate are NOT brave but cozy. They disgust me ... I'd almost (make that almost!) rather see Republicans in charge and completely trash the place. That way, come 06 or 08, true Democratic Senators could run and be elected by the people.

I didn't consider my original post incoherent if you consider that it's "our children" who will be amassing huge debt IF we continue to support these cowardly clowns who masquerade as Democratic Senators.

Bottom line: We need to throw out *all* these gutless wonders. They do not serve their constituents.

9. Excellent!
THis is the reality very true. Frist was not in on this and when the next Supreme Court Judge comes up if we don't like him we have to have an "Extreme Circumstance" (What would that be the nominee was a former priest who molested boys?) to muster a fillabuster? I don't get it. Why would anyone but LIEberman be happy about this sell out? Well the fact that LIEberman is happy with it should tell us alot!

Hitler actually said something like "we have no further territorial aims in Europe" as part of the Munich sellout. Like the Repugs, he was a man of his word! Uh-huh.

19. We need to think of the current Republican
machinery in terms of the Mafia. How does it work? Well, you pay us to protect you. From what? The bad guys. Who are the bad guys? Those that would rob or harm you and/or your business or even your family. What if I don't pay you? Then we'll break your kneecaps. Now, who are the bad guys again?

24. 18 voted against cloture
Maybe you better go find out who they are before you make comments like this.

And explain to me why Boxer stood with Harry Reid last night, then flipped and voted against cloture today.
