Poll question: Which state has the best Senate delegation?
Edited on Mon May-23-05 09:44 PM by Bucky
As a Texan, I gotta admit I'm pretty jealous of Illinois's US Senate delegation. But it's hardly the only state with a one-two punch. Which one do you think is the strongest delegation?
(possible criteria include constituent services, opposing the Bush administration, calling out the Bushies on their bullshit, effectiveness at bringing home big pork, and providing exemplary reasoning and logic in the world's former formost debating society)

Try and avoid voting for your own state, please

Would you just say whether or not you actually live there?

I find this fascinating.

2. Strongest or best?
Illinois looks awfully pretty, for sure, but MA and CA have more actual strength.

16. Even a D like her counts towards control of committees.
I'd take few more DINOs over elephants any day.

Of course, I'd rather a few more Kerrys and Kennedys first, but you know...

If you run a "worst Senate delegation" poll, my vote goes to Oklahoma.

But other sucky state delegations include Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Hmmm, maybe I should make another poll.

Pat Roberts is currently writing "Patriot 2," and Sam Brownback is looking to 2008 by running to the right of George W. Bush...

Any state with Rick Santorum is a contender right out of the gate.

I hope Chuck or Bob or SOMEONE beats the crap out of Santorum in 2006. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Born and raised in the Ninth, live now in the Fifth with Emanuel, so my reps and senators rock.

But Kerry and Teddy rock as well, as do several others on that list

30. Nuthin', but I was limited to ten options.
I also skipped over Maryland and New Jersey. I'm an admirer of Carl Levin's work, but Michigan's delegation seems to lack the fire power of the New Yorkers and the presidential qualities of Illinois's two senators, or the gravitas of West Virginia's senators. I'll admit that Hawaii made the cut mostly because of seniority alone: the two Aloha Senators are just so fucking old.

27. Only 1 point of disagreement
The only thing I disagree with the original post on is the "effectiveness of bringing home big pork." If Congress could think more about the nation as a whole and less about wasteful pet projects, we would all be much better off.

37. Did you see her 20 minute speech on the Senate floor
this evening? She was fabulous. She thanked the moderate R's for doing the right thing and then she used about 10 minutes to discuss Brown and why she doesn't deserve to be approved. But the most amazing thing she did was explain her reasons for wanting to do away with the filibuster when she was a freshman. She said the R's were relentless in their quest not to nominate any of President Clinton's appointees and she got frustrated. The difference, she said, is that she attempted to change the Senate rules the right way...by trying to get 67 votes which, she admitted, was impossible. She admitted she was wrong and that she had made a mistake. It was important for the Senate rules to remain the way they were. It was wonderful.

I saw that Jeff Sessions (R) from Alabama was speaking next and I started to turn the channel but the minute he started speaking, he was looking around for Senator Boxer and scolding her for her attempt to change the Senate rules years before. Senator Boxer came back to the floor, grabbed a microphone and told him that if he had listened to her speech, he would have heard her explain it and her admission of being wrong at the time.
He fumbled for words and then apologized and looked like a total idiot. I smiled and changed the channel.

...OK, that's a lie. I hope you appreciate this vote from Illinois, Massachusetts! :toast:

For experience and clout, you win, because you're so good at hanging on to the good ones for such a long time. (Although of course I wish one of your Senators was no longer a Senator, having gotten a significant promotion).

But we are breathing down your neck, MA. The flip side of our two fine gentlemen & scholars being so much younger (our senior senator is roughly the same age as your junior) is that we have an excellent chance to catch up.

36. North Dakota.
You'd have to be pretty talentless to lose as a democrat in New York, Illinois, California, Massachusetts, or Maryland. However, the Dakotas give us three senators, where we could easily have none at all. Without those three senators, tonight would have turned out quite differently.
