The Newsweek setup didn't work - chumps!
The assholes in the White House thought they could set up Newsweek to cover up embarrassing Guantanamo abuses, much like they set up CBS to cover up Bush's embarrassing AWOL record in the TANG.

Hey Karl and Karen - poor little things. Thought you could use the same trick twice? Didn't work, did it? Poor little chumps.

This is why they don't live up to the hype. Losers.

1. Newsweek Got Gitmo Right
Newsweek Got Gitmo Right
by Calgacus*

Contrary to White House spin, the allegations of religious desecration at Guantanamo published by Newsweek on May 9, 2005, are common among ex-prisoners and have been widely reported outside the United States. Several former detainees at the Guantanamo and Bagram prisons have reported instances of their handlers sitting or standing on the Koran, throwing or kicking it in toilets, and urinating on it. Prior to the Newsweek article, the New York Times reported a Guantanamo insider asserting that the commander of the facility was compelled by prisoner protests to address the problem and issue an apology.

One such incident (during which the Koran was allegedly thrown in a pile and stepped on) prompted a hunger strike among Guantanamo detainees in March 2002. Regarding this, the New York Times in a May 1, 2005, article interviewed a former detainee, Nasser Nijer Naser al-Mutairi, who said the protest ended with a senior officer delivering an apology to the entire camp. And the Times reports: "A former interrogator at Guantanamo, in an interview with the Times, confirmed the accounts of the hunger strikes, including the public expression of regret over the treatment of the Korans." (Neil A. Lewis and Eric Schmitt, "Inquiry Finds Abuses at Guantanamo Bay," New York Times, May 1, 2005.)

2. Still pretty early in the game to be calling winners and losers.
I'm sure Koran-in-the-Can-gate has had a chilling effect elsewhere. That pillar of journalistic integrity, USA Today (sarcasm), announced that it wouldn't be using so many unnamed sources. We'll see how long that lasts.

3. I probably wouldn't either
I think unnamed sources is a risky game brought forth by our market-driven journalism. I think all this is doing is 1) making our news media more reliable, and 2) making them hate the Bush White House with every ounce of their being.

It could not be more obvious to fellow journalists now that Dan Rather was a set-up. I pray for a MSM reporter with a strong reputation to take a risk and do some fact-finding.

Karl, you self-destructing loser.

4. Turns out that
Karl Rove is actually from West Michigan. Grand Rapids Press said he is from Jamestown, or at least his family is. Great, what a hell of a representative for West Michigan.

5. Karl needs a little "press attention," I say
You know, a little exploring. That would be good. From someone outside the White House press corp.
