BAGHDAD - The U.S. military acknowledged Friday that a photo of ousted Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in his underwear, which a British tabloid newspaper published on its front page, was real and said it was "aggressively" investigating how it could have been taken and by whom.

The photo and others also published not only angered the U.S. military, which issued a condemnation rare for its immediacy, but were expected to further fuel anti-American sentiment in Iraq and other parts of the Middle East.

President Bush said Friday that he did not think the photos would re-energize insurgents in Iraq. “I don’t think a photo inspires murderers,” Bush said when asked by reporters at the White House. “I think the insurgency is inspired by their desire to stop the march of freedom."

The White House earlier said Bush "strongly supports the aggressive and thorough investigation that is already under way." “The president wants to get to the bottom of the investigation, it would be premature to make any sort of suggestions or speculation about the source or the motivation,” Duffy said.

These photos are violations of the GC which Iraq, U.S. and UK signed. Will the person that released these photos be tried for the violations?

Yes, the matter is stupid. I have seen videos of Saddam in bathing suit on Natl. TV and no stir about that. The bathing trunks were not white but the same style as the underwear. It is a weird thing but obvious why the photos were taken and released. Humiliation. This may have results that cause more death and maiming for U.S. troops or mercs. Not exactly amusing.
