Headsup: Darfur genocide update and information thread - PLEASE JOIN

Let's make the Darfur genocide thread currently in GD a useful information resource and rallying point for activism. The position of the unelected US government has been CRIMINAL on this - as usual. We need to not only address the ongoing killing in the Sudan, we also need to hold the administration accountable for their inactivity on this issue. In fact, they've ot only been inactive, they've been OPPOSING moves that would help. I'm posting this headsup here in GD-P because many of you don't follow GD as closely and it is such a fast-moving forum, things are easy to miss there.

I just added in a reply to the Darfur genocide thread a summary of the pending legislation related to Dafur. It's politically illuminating as well as important in its own right. There are two main "genocide accountability" bills pending, and one has teeth and one doesn't. Guess which one the neocon scumsuckers - including Cornyn - are behind. We'll have to work harder to keep it alive after the 24 hours on the Greatest Page expires early Sat AM. I really do hate that automatic rule when it affects a post that is just reaching its peak of usefulness. Oh well. At least we HAVE the Greatest Page - hard to imagine DU without it now.

We need to get a better handle on exactly what provisions of the pending legislation are essential and how to push for them.

I'll keep posting new articles in that thread and at some point will start a new one with a link to the old one. If you don't mind, I'll PM you to give you a headsup when that happens. Anyone else who wants a headsup is welcome to ask. Or, if this is a topic especially close to your heart, feel free to start the next thread yourself and PM me about it.

I just want to keep this topic prominent. It's been too much under the radar. In addition to stopping the genocide, we need to hang that hypocritical "culture of life" pledge around Bush's neck and connect it to what he has done - and not done - in Darfur as well as in Iraq and in the terrible treatment of the poor and the military in his own country.
