Animal Rights activists acting more like terrorists
COMMACK, N.Y. - Last month, animal rights extremists followed the wife of a pharmaceutical company executive to her job, rifled through her car and stole a credit card. They used it buy $20,000 in travelers checks, which they then donated to four charities.

A Web site announcement boasting of the act included a more sinister threat:

"If we find out a dime of that money granted to those charities was taken back we will strip you bear (sic) and burn your (expletive). This is OUR insurance policy."

...The president of the Foundation for Biomedical Research, a group backed by institutions that rely on animal research, said ALF members operate like terrorists.

1. I am sure that will get people to flock to their banner
Bunch of morons don't they know the moment the credit card company finds out where the money went its going back to them. So I guess they will have to carry out their threat. Hopefully no one will get hurt and they will get caught and think about what they have done in jail.

4. While I applaud the sentiment -
I do NOT applaud or condone the actions. I'm a vegetarian, and all for animal rights. I am not for these tactics. It's no different than fundie freaks harrassing women outside Planned Parenthood, or, taken further, the bombing of clinics.

NOT COOL.

for meaning in life.

11. Some background
Which the yahoo article predictably glossed over...

The "pharmaceutical company" is Forest Laboratories, who contract the infamous Huntingdon Life Sciences, a notorious animal abuser. I don't have the stomach to watch the videos, but the descriptions of what goes on in this company's labs are disgusting.

http://www.shac.net/MISC/cruelty/cruelty.html

A Washington Post article which presents a lot more background info: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/05/08/AR2005050800793.html

While I don't condone violence to further a political cause unless absolutely necessary, I can understand the desperation of some within the AR movement when reports of these abuses are ignored by the general public, and the feeling that some action has to be taken now instead of later.

12. Neither side is right on this one.
The company involved is not kind to animals, to say the least.

That said, terrorism against the executive isn't acceptable.

16. While I have no problems
With those who wish to promote animal rights.... tactics like these is definitely not the way to go about it. Don't see where I can add anymore than what has already been said.

All it takes is a few whackos to shed negative light on anyone's cause though. I wonder if these guys can get it in their brain they did more harm than good with this tactic.... "shakes head". I really don't have anything really insightful besides that.

18. I completely agree.
As I said before, I can understand the desperation activists can feel, but this doesn't help the cause, even if the only casualties are some Hummers or the bottom lines of a laboratory.

The media will never report all the good that animal rights activists do, because this kind of thing gets better ratings. Just one more so-called terrorist to be afraid of.

19. Agreed
Animal right activists do much good, but no one wants to hear about the good, they want to hear the chaos and the negativity because like you said better ratings. That's what news pretty much boils down to now... just like any other show on Television... ratings.
