4. Another flyer
Edited on Tue May-17-05 08:52 PM by TexasLawyer

I've been shocked at how many people don't know ANYTHING about what their government has been up to. In my own efforts to address this problem, I have written a one page flyer that gives some teasers on the big political stories that people are NOT getting from commercial media.

I've pulled together a number of news items, including the 14 permanent US military bases in Iraq, Seymour Hersh's reports about US commandos in Iran, the Downing Street Memo, 100,000 dead Iraqi civilians, and other matters that people should know about-- and I hope that when people read these items all together they will realize how seriously they have been lied to and what a pickle this country is in.

I have been distributing my flyer all over the place in hopes of both educating and motivating people to take action. I've been:

--e-mailing it to friends and family, asking that they spread it around;

--making copies on bright paper and slipping flyers into newspapers and shoppers;

--personally handing them out ("witnessing");

--hanging them on skirt hangers in department store clothing racks (to be discovered later by shoppers looking through the clothes); and

--making them available in free newspaper kiosks.

I invite everyone to do the same.

The folks at ToppleBush.com have been kind enough to post the flyer on their site, where it is available for downloads.

Here is the link to the specific page on which the flyer is posted.

http://www.topplebush.com/flyers/antiwar2.pdf

But also, check out the other flyers posted on the site. There are some great ones.

25. Multi-tasking!
My latest multi-task mission (advocacy plus shopping) was to take copies of my flyers (link posted above) and some "Deception Dollar" into a store which I won't name-- but it begins with "T" and ends with "arget." I clipped one of each onto skirt hangers on the racks.

The next shopper who comes along and looks at those particular skirts or pants will find the message I left for them.

20. Printed a bunch yesterday and last night three different stores had 'em!!
I hooked my fellow Lib office workers up with copies and then we all went shopping last night. One of 'em really put her whole list on it as well, I told her not to do that anymore as shes a vegan!! HAHAhehehe, they felt pretty good about it like they were part of some "underground". Which I expected from the vegan friend but the other 50+ office marms, I hadn't expected to see them so pleased with themselves.

Good stuff!!

Edited on Wed May-18-05 10:44 PM by Lady Effingbroke
I work at a grocery store.

I'm going to print some of the handbills/lists and slip them inside the store "circular" sales ads which are conveniently placed on a table next to the shopping carts. People invariably walk into the store and grab the latest ads along with a cart!

Kicked, bookmarked, and nominated!

also editted fur speling!

33. Pointers and feedback. (I am a professional print designer.)
I hate to rain on your parade -- you've obviously worked very hard, but I think the grocery list cheapens the message. (And along with the title takes away space that you could use for your message.)

I wish I had the time to do some of these right now, to show you what I mean but I don't. I was just released from a, 18 day hospital stay and am still recovering/trying to catch up on my professional work.

Here are some other pointers that I think might be helpful:

1. Simple clear language. Short sentences -- front load the document.

Most important = top of the page/beginning of the sentence.

Minimize you points per page. Bullet them. You'll need to rewrite what's been giving to you in many cases, but . . .

Shoot for less than 15 words per line -- 7 - 11 if you can.

2. Use a serif font (i.e. times roman) for the smaller (body) copy. Is far more readable than a sans serif (what you are using--i.e. ariel.)

3. If you are concerned with readability, adequate leading (the space between the lines of text) is just as important as size of type. You might want to try adjusting and see what happens.

4. If you are not, include follow up info at the bottom of the page -- (For more info go to www......)

That's all for now . . . trying to be constructive here. Hope you are not offended.

44. Some yes, some no
These days, serifs are interpreted as heavy reading. People are more likely to look at the flier if it's in sans serif. The shopping list is for the activist, a mental bug to remind people to keep putting these fliers out. It's good.

Other than that, they are too long. If they're going to be left in shopping carts, they should be designed to draw the reader quickly through them. That's a problem I've seen with lefties in general, WAY too much verbage on everything.
