Molly Ivins: “Let's Drop the "Lynch Newsweek" Bull”
Molly Ivins: “Let's Drop the "Lynch Newsweek" Bull”
17 May 2005

In her column today about the Newsweek retraction, Molly Ivins tells the truth about who’s to blame…

“…let's drop the "Lynch Newsweek" bull. Seventeen people have died in these riots. They didn't die because of anything Newsweek did -- the riots were caused by what our government has done.

Get your minds around it. Our country is guilty of torture. To quote myself once more: "What are you going to do about this? It's your country, your money, your government. You own this country, you run it, you are the board of directors. They are doing this in your name. The people we elected to public office do what you want them to. Perhaps you should get in touch with them."

So, what are we doing about this? Newsweek may have slanted right of late, but we can’t stand by and watch another news source slide down the tubes and take the fall for the extremists currently running the show. We need to keep talking about this... LOUDER!

1. ROCK ON MOLLY - LOUDER LOUDER LOUDER
Molly rocks..

let's all start screaming , right now, so that the world can hear that a majority of Americans did not elect Bush in 2000 or 2004.

So let's scream louder about election fraud which is what is the ROOT CAUSE OF ALL THESE PROBLEMS...

rock on Molly...

3. Well, well, well. Looks like Keith Olbermann isn't alone...

Well, well, well.

This is gaining a little traction. GOOD!

This was my gut reaction from the beginning. Then Olbermann's Bloggermann really lets 'em have it. And now Molly Ivins. Good Golly, Miz Molly!

I suspect that - if these people are saying it, it means a LOT more people are thinking it.

People are starting to smell a rat.

4. Molly has consistently told the truth about this administration
She's one of the few columnists I read. Paul Krugman is another.

5. Did you see Krugman's op-ed this past Sunday?
I attached it to a John Conyers thread yesterday.

9. Yes, I saw it
He didn't pull any punches.

I'd like to hear more on what he has in mind about this:

"So we need to get beyond the clichés - please, no more "pottery barn principles" or "staying the course." I'm not advocating an immediate pullout, but we have to tell the Iraqi government that our stay is time-limited, and that it has to find a way to take care of itself. The point is that something has to give. We either need a much bigger army - which means a draft - or we need to find a way out of Iraq. "

14. Yes, you're completely correct.
Didn't mean to sound as though this was news to me.

I share your opinion. I've saved dozens of her columns since way back in the early days of this mal-administration, back when I could have sworn she was the ONLY voice speaking for me - aside from Krugman. They've been my heroes for a LONG time. I'm just gratified to see that it's not me going out on a limb and getting all conspiracy-nut-ish. I tend to jump to the farthest conclusions with these rat-bastards, because I tend immediately to suspect the worst of them. It's kinda neat to see that others with higher-level, and longer-lived perspective than mine see it, too. And when THEY call it, they're in position to be a LOT louder and more widely read.

It's easy to ignore a windbag like me, venting here in these threads. But folks like Molly Ivins AND Paul Krugman, and now Keith Olbermann, have stature. And a platform. And they're not nearly as easy to ignore. And if they're out there seeing this, you can bet good money that others are too. Maybe some of those others are still afraid to say so. At least, for now...

But you're correct to point that out. Molly Ivins has been onto these people for a LONG time.

16. It is nice to know that there are signs of intelligent life in the US
And I don't blame you for being excited about it. I just wish to hell more people got to see and hear Molly Ivins. It's the marginalizing of these folks that makes it hard to convince others to just look at what is in front of their faces.

Maybe it's her appearance? She's not young and nubile and blonde with big pouty lips and a lot of nice makeup and coifing. Or maybe it's her twang. But none of that bothers me. I've seen her on TV before and she's very engaging and sly-witted. Her zingers hit the bull's-eye over and over and over. And I'd rather listen to her twang than the nonsensical droning of the asshole in the Oval Office, ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. His is WAY more offensive than hers. His EVERYTHING is way more offensive than hers. But then again, she's no 23-year-old. And she may not even have a good agent. Which isn't a bit fair. Or maybe she simply doesn't want to have her own show and be tied down like that every day. I wish we could see her more often, though. Her perspective and her wit are VERY MUCH needed.

11. A longer version of her column...

(snip)

Uh, people, I hate to tell you this, but the story about Americans abusing the Koran in order to enrage prisoners has been out there for quite some time. The first mention I found of it is March 17, 2004, when the Independent of London interviewed the first British citizen released from Guantanamo Bay. The prisoner said he had been physically beaten but did not consider that as bad as the psychological torture, which he described extensively. Jamal al-Harith, a computer programmer from Manchester, said 70 percent of the inmates had gone on a hunger strike after a guard kicked a copy of the Koran. The strike was ended by force-feeding.

(snip)

The New York Times reported on May 1 on the same investigation Newsweek was writing about and interviewed a released Kuwaiti, who spoke of three major hunger strikes, one of them touched off by "guards' handling copies of the Koran, which had been tossed into a pile and stomped on. A senior officer delivered an apology over the camp's loudspeaker system, pledging that such abuses would stop. Interpreters, standing outside each prison block, translated the officer's apology. A former interrogator at Guantanamo, in an interview with the Times, confirmed the accounts of the hunger strikes, including the public expression of regret over the treatment of the Korans."

Our republican light senator and to Barbara Boxer who also voted for the extra $82B to murder and torture a few more Iraqis:

------------------------------

"WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT THE TORTURE?

I can't say it any better than Molly Ivins so I'll let her tell it:

"Get your minds around it. Our country is guilty of torture. To quote myself once more: "What are you going to do about this? It's your country, your money, your government. You own this country, you run it, you are the board of directors. They are doing this in your name. The people we elected to public office do what you want them to. http://www.sacbee.com/content/opinion/national/ivins/story/12906109p-13754566c.html

I am getting in touch with you now. This is IMPORTANT. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT THE TORTURE???

You could have refused to vote for more money to finance the torture but you didn't.

I selected homeland security as the subject because that is the bottom line. This IS a security issue. What bush has done to the reputation of this country is TREASON. He should be brought up on charges but in this climate of right wing, fundamentalist rule, I'm afraid it ain't gonna happen."

But, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT THE TORTURE???

20. There are precious few real journalists left.
Ms. Ivins is one of the leaders of the pack.

You gotta love Molly Ivins--unless, of course, you are a Texas Republican. Somehow I doubt that she tops Bug Bomb tom's reading list.

22. The plan is to discredit the media to the point NOBODY believes anything
they say. Nobody on the right. Nobody on the left. If you notice, it's been working out pretty good. Once our media is gone, our country is gone. So, Media, I hope you notice the wake-up call. You must regain your integrity, or you will lose yourselves completely and us in the process.
