Newsweek: Think happy thoughts
Newsweek is taking a pummeling. They have to know that this will not be good for business, either way. They could have stood up and defended themselves, but obviously some pressure was brought to bear. But, they haven't completely backed down. They still know who their original source was, plus, this story has been circulating for a while. The only "new" aspect to this version was the "confirmation" by a "senior government official" who has refused to stand behind the story he gave Newsweek. Newsweeks says they'll dig deeper to find corroboration.

So the "happy thought," which isn't really all that happy, all things considered; Newsweek digs deeper and finds undeniable, corroborated proof to substantiate its story, and used the finding to bitch-slap McClelland and BushCO into submission, and point out their fascist intimidation tactics for what they are.

Hey, I can dream can't I?

1. Sounds like all our expressed wishes after the CBS-Rather smear...
Sadly, they caved big time as well.

3. Well, I for one, just renewed my subscription to Newsweek.
The story happened, we all know it. This is another Rovian spin to make the 'liberal' media out to be the bad guys.

I think it is semantics as well. I think that they forced the prisoners to use the pages of the Koran as toilet paper, and did not actually flush the book down the toilet.

Just my opinion.

4. history lesson
This is all reminding me less of Vietnam than it is McCarthyism. With Vietnam the freedom of the press remained intact, despite efforts on the part of some to silence it. With McCarthy--well, it built up to a big crescendo (it being the fanatic bashing of socialists) and it basically all came crashing down in one moment. Let's hope and pray we are close to that moment.

5. In Time, I Believe And Hope Dan Rather And Newsweek Are Vindicated..
...the truth will eventually be known, sometimes it takes a little longer (IE. Iran-Contra).

6. I'm sure the truth will be known and acknowledged someday...
just as Galileo was eventually forgiven by the Catholics for telling the truth. I just wish the wheels would turn a little faster!
