in response to Frist wanting to "go nuclear". He told Frist the story of Esther, who saved her people from the plot of a man named Haman. Haman built a very large gallows and ordered the death of Esther's uncle, Mordecai. Esther was the favorite concubine of the king and let the king know about the plot. Haman woke up in the morning only to be marched to the gallows he built and summarily hung from it.

Byrd was subtlely telling Frist that the gallows he builds may be his undoing.

Listening to the rerun of this on C-SPAN. This was a brilliant use of parliamentary rules. Byrd gave Frist and the Rs a little taste of fillibuster. He made sure that he could keep floor and used the opportunity to eviscerate them.
