As I listened to you at the hearing on John Bolton I began to compose a message to you in my mind. Sadly it's an entirely different message that I now send.

As you went into all the reasons why this was not the best man we could send to the UN I thought "Now here is a statesman. He's not going to vote in lockstep with his party members. He knows this is terribly wrong and he's going to vote his conscience. Bravo. He deserves the thanks of all American citizens, no matter what party they support."

And then, in the last sentence I heard you say words to the effect of "But I won't impose my feelings/opinion on my senate colleagues" and everything changed.

It's a shame.
You came so very close to real statesmanship.
