Proposed Billboard: BUSH LIED TO START THE WAR: New Proof
Edited on Mon May-09-05 03:17 PM by Jackpine Radical
See www.placeholder. com

The idea is to put up billboards directing people to the website of our choice, to feed them information. The lead story this month would be the Downing St. Memo, next month something else.

Maybe also an information campaign on Gannon/Guckert:

WHO'S BEEN SLEEPING AT THE WHITE HOUSE?
See www.placeholder. com

etc.

In each case we would coordinate this with a host website we'd like the general public to visit (e.g. Buzzflash), so the curious surfer would be dipped into a whole bunch of interesting tidbits.

It cost us about $500 to rent a billboard for a "Peace is Patriotic" message just before the war, & probly there are better deals for larger orders. In any case, this may be a decent way to get people informed about what's going on.

Just another way to try for a few end runs around corporate media self-censorship.

I would appreciate everyone's thoughts on this matter.

1. I think it's a great idea...
How do you go about organizing, though? How about setting up a PayPal fund for renting the space, and asking people to contribute a fixed amount, say $3.00?

7. If they were willing to take it on.
There is a lot of organizational work required here.
-Coordinating with one or more informational websites
-Identifying billboard locations & getting contracts w. owners
-Designing , producint & distributing the billboard art
-About 1 million other things I haven't even thought about yet...

15. This needs more recommendations.
So more people here will see it. I can only offer one, myself. Anybody else?

13. So would I.
It IS a good idea.

Maybe if there were billboards popping up like this in a number of places, THAT would get coverage. At least locally.

11. I don't think it would generate much response:
When you consider that the number of people who vote is apallingly low, and when you consider that, most likely, more people know the performers on American Idol than know who their representatives in congress are, and when you take into account that a lot of folks, I think, already figure he lied and that they just don't seem to give a crap.... I don't know. I think the money would be better spent supporting the 2006 Democratic senate races. I mean, if Americans could really be counted on to get pissed about bush I would think that we'd be seeing protests on the scale of the Vietnam protests. But I live in liberal Austin, and we had one massive march at the beginning of the war and then pfffffft, the peace movement went underground or ended up as slogans on bumper stickers. I hate to be a wet blanket, but it's my two cents.

An interesting empirical question, nicht wahr? Not TERRIBLY expensive to conduct a test.

14. Truly. If we all just give up before we even start something, then
it's an absolute 100 percent guarantee that nothing will change. I'd prefer something that might - just might - make a difference. Sure beats remaining silent and letting the bad guys win ANOTHER one.

28. I hear what you're saying-
Two points:
1) A lot of us are tapped out financially. I spent at least a grand during the last election cycle. I want to spend money on projects that really may work (ads on T.V. and in papers, for example).

2) The Mepublicans have been winning (or stealing, at least), yet I've not seen them using billboards. Maybe they are in other areas.

16. My only caveat
would be that a great many billboard in the country are owned by Clear Channel. Of course, business is business and maybe I'm worried over nothing. I have no money to speak of, but would commit to $10 a month for the next 2 years if someone else can promise this will happen. It's a great idea. Especially if the placement has some thinking applied to it.....

campaigning against the IRAN war too.

19. Kicked & nominated....
I suggested a while back a "We, The Media" campaign... We have GOT to make some kind of end run around the MSM. They are KEEPING the truth from America as we all well know and I think we must grab hold of something. We are the Paul Reveres of this day and age. If, however, we never get off our computers and hop on the damn horse, history will judge us accordingly.

20. My first question is
where are they going to be put?

If we put, say 4, in each state, that would be around $100,000. Not an un-doable amount, but where in each state would they go? 4 billboards per state is not very good coverage.

I think it's a great idea, and I'd be willing to make a $20 monthly donation to get it going, but unless some group with the experience to get it organized logistically, I think it's just gonna remain only that - a great idea.

22. We could maintain a few billboards, changing messages as warranted.
Lots of potential here, great idea.

I'd alter your message to:
BUSH LIED ABOUT IRAQ.
HE DID. NEVER FORGET IT.

But that's just me. Your's is excellent - look at the response.

26. We gor a "Peace is Patriotic" billboard put up in Eau Claire, WI
just before the war. I think it cost us $500. The message stayed up for several months before somebody else rented it. So I KNOW it can be done.
