Will Lt. Gov. Steele (R-MD) be an idiot of the week? - (MAHER VIDEO)VIDEO: Panel segment from Real Time with Bill Maher
Maryland's Lt. Governor Michael Steele appeared as a panelist on this week's Bill Maher show. Steele mounted weak defenses of ultra-right-wing principles from tax cuts for the rich to institutionalized homophobia. He could be one of this week's Top 10 Conservative Idiots.
Quotes
On tax cuts for the rich and budget cuts for Medicaid: "The reality of it is that we are finally facing up to the fact that we have deficits. There is some balancing going on in Washington right now that, you know, it's hitting some spots you don't want it to his."
On the rich getting poorer under Bush?: "I'd say that some have. I've seen some brothers out there struggling"
More on tax cuts for the rich: "What are you talking about? What is this going towards? Is it the Paris Hiltons or is it the middle class?"
Michael Steele to Martin Short: "Did you vote for Bush or... what's your deal?"
Marty Short replies: "I voted for Ketty."
Steele to Martin Short: "OK. Give your money back."
Steele lectures the audience: "...you guys are living in la-la land. You need to deal with the real world... I'm sorry. You don't like it? Give your money to the government and let them redistribute it for you!"
Michael Steele To Bill Maher: "Who are the rich? Who are the rich? Come on, Bill. Who are the rich?"
On the 35% approval rating of Republican Congress: "That's true for any Congress... that's typical for any congress. Typically you will find the Congressional numbers to be way low. ..That's just how people feel about congress. You know, House and Senate."
Defending Republican homophobia: "It is what people come to in their heart and their mind in terms of values in a given community, a given mindset. And, again, this is supposed to be the land of the free and the home of the brave and all this other good stuff where you can feel certain things and believe certain things and not be penalized for them... People come to these issues with a certain set of values, I think what both parties have to do... it's how people view the institution of marriage, it's what they've been taught, it's what what they take from the Bible teachings on the subject. I mean, it's just whole lot of things wrapped up in it. I'm just saying we need to respect that piece first..."
