Dick Durbin says Democrats won't shut down Senate if Nuclear option used?
Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, said Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has reached out to Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., to find a reasonable solution. "But we haven't gotten very far," Durbin said on CBS's "Face the Nation."

He said that Democrats would not shut down the Senate if the GOP succeeds in banning the filibuster.

The article itself if nothing more than a piece of right wing media propaganda using most of the current right wing talking points and presenting them as facts.

That's not surprising considering how right wing Yahoo is, but why is there a quote from Durbin saying that Democrats won't fight back if the Republicans try to thwart the Constitution on the filibuster? Is this a new quote? Has our side given in?

1. he said it this morning
to Bob Scheifer, Face the Nation. I heard it myself.

he spoke of alternatives that would basically slow down the senate and keep them focused on education, health issues, etc.

claims the 'shut-down' was a Repug talking point blaming the Dems.

6. He had already said that on the Senate flloor last week.
This is not new. They know that closing the Congress backfired on Newt Gingritch and want to force a different perception on the public.

9. Yup
I think the Repugs are using "shut down" to make it sound like what Newt did. We know how unpopular that was.

7. that too
was mentioned by Durbin.

lots of tactics.

he also mentioned it was Newt that shut down the gov't, and the Dems wouldn't play that way.

12. Reading bills word for word
might not be such a bad idea, given R's proclivity for slamming through legislation before Dems have a chance to read it.

4. This article is really misleading
Edited on Sun May-01-05 05:16 PM by Mass
He said that they would not shut down the Senate, but would force the Republicans to live by the rule, reading all bills completely rather than ignoring the reading by unanimous consent, putting their bills to be considered by the Senate without going to committee, ...

This would slow down the Senate considerably and the Senators would have to be on the floor a lot, but they would still be working.

Schieffer was incredibly biased this morning, insisting that the Democrats were wrong on SS and on the filibuster, and refusing to understand what Durbin was saying.

8. Durbin didn't say any such thing in a quote.
What he said inside quotations was one thing, the characterization of those words was far different from what he actually said. They do not even resemble each other.
