HHS ANNOUNCES $31,900,000 FROM COMPASSION CAPITAL FUND
Funds Help Faith-Based and Community Groups Build Capacity, Serve Those in Need

HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt announced today that $31,900,000 is available from the Compassion Capital Fund (CCF). Secretary Leavitt made the announcement at the Oak Corners at the Center for Community Cooperation in Dallas. The funds are designed to help faith-based and community groups build capacity and serve those in need.

“The Compassion Capital Fund strengthens what President Bush calls the ‘armies of compassion’ with the necessary resources to help those most in need,” Secretary Leavitt said. “These funds will help faith-based and community groups build the capacity to serve the poor, the hungry, the homeless, at-risk youth, rural communities and to strengthen marriage across the nation.”

Today’s announcement consists of two sets of funds. The first set of $16.9 million, from the CCF Demonstration Program, is available to up to 17 intermediary organizations to provide technical assistance and sub awards. These intermediary organizations serve as a bridge between the federal government and faith-based and community organizations.

The second set of $15 million, from the CCF Targeted Capacity Building Program, is available to 300 faith-based and community organizations for capacity building, to address the needs of at-risk youth, and the homeless, to provide voluntary marriage education and preparation services, and to offer social services to those living in rural communities.

“This funding will strengthen children and families from the grassroots up,” said Dr. Wade F. Horn, HHS assistant secretary for children and families. “With this initiative, President Bush is forming strong partnerships between the federal government and community and faith-based organizations to deliver effective and compassionate services to those in need.”

The CCF was created by President Bush in 2002 as a special initiative to help faith-based and community organizations improve their effectiveness, enhance their ability to provide social services and emulate model social service programs.

1. Compassion ONLY for the Righteous Repub Voters that is
Edited on Fri Apr-29-05 01:49 PM by AuntiBush
The rest of us can sincerely go to hell.

To think, we pay for this. It's frightening to think these faith-based organizations are tax-exempt as it is, then this. In other words, if we'll need aide, help or charity, you'll eventually be forced to enter their cult-base - right!

Sick! Forget about all the other old churches we have, crumbling to the ground. Rather, I see countless brand spankin-new, or completely remodeled Evangelical tabernacle type sites going up all over the place.

Hey, like he said, "either you're with him (them), or, well... you're not (left behind)!"

2. What is the difference between this and normal charitable organizations?
One (or two) more layers of bureaucracy and more ways to siphon money, and less transparency. Everything * touches gets filthy.

3. This is bad
the wording is just vague enough to allow the money to be used for anything they'd like - even building of new churches...

And this bothers me allot: what President Bush calls the ‘armies of compassion’

I swear that phrase isn't a slip of words, I'm beginning to believe these weirdo Christian groups he plays to, are planning some kind of armed revolution...with him in office, they have the money and they have the arms...

5. Right
What Bush should do is do like my governor does and he works with the faith-based people. He listen's to them and consider's what they have to say but I haven't ever heard him pushing for faith-based programs like this (democratic gov Phil Bredesen of Tn). Instead Bush is giving them tax-payer's money so they can do whatever they wish with their programs. You bet they are ready for a revolution. A revolution to make Christianity the rule of law and the Bible and convert everybody else or you're screwed in society. Really dangerous and fucked up.

4. I don't like it either
Especially the faith-based programs. What if they need to have the facts about things? Will they go with the facts or the faith? :\ I think Bush and the republicans want to do away with every social program in this country (from SS to welfare) and if they do have any programs like welfare they want to make it faith-based and make it to where you have to "turn your life to Jesus" before they help you. :\ They're very hellbent on converting every last soul in this country.

6. I think it's more about control
than conversion for your soul. The church is right there in the neighborhood and can spy on you and control your neighbors to inform on each other and on and on. Plus these Mega Church's are another form of Big Business and free enterprise now, there is no Real Religion with these places, they are just consumerism in the name of Jesus.
