The Senate and Filibuster Changes

Live on Radio NOW!
Audio (replay) for this story will be available at approx. 6:00 p.m. ET

Talk of the Nation, April 27, 2005 · During President Bush's first term, Democrats blocked 10 of his judicial nominees by filibuster, which takes a three-fifths majority -- 60 votes -- to end. In order to get these nominees to a vote, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is threatening to use another parliamentary device that's been called the nuclear option: declaring filibusters of judicial nominees to be unconstitutional.

Guests:

Sen. Patrick Leahy, (D-VT); ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee

Sen. John Cornyn, (R-TX); member of Senate Judiciary Committee

1. For those that missed it, Sen. Leahy was GREAT, Cornyn very lame.
Sen. Leahy got some really good shots in, saying several times that "...now that Senator Frist is running for President..." among other things. He got a few "Soft balls" from the callers, but he also got a VERY stupid opinion from so yahoo in North Carolina, which he knock out of the park. (end of Baseball metaphors)

Then when Sen. Cornyn came on, he got a bunch of very angry REPUBLICAN callers, and told several of them, they were wrong.

Worth a listen if you have 30 minutes. Here's the link to the audio link. <http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4621755>
