Marilyn QUAYLE Urged to Run for Arizona Governor
Other Quayle urged to run for governor

Apr. 17, 2005 12:00 AM

Political Insider is a tongue-in-cheek look at the past week in Arizona politics.

Quayle for governor? No, not that one . . . There seems to be a rumor every week about some top-flight Republican being desperately wooed to run against Janet Napolitano in 2006. The latest is Marilyn Quayle, the smart, politically savvy wife of former Vice President Dan Quayle. This one ain't idle gossip.

GOP Chairman Matt Salmon spoke to Quayle on Friday and the two had an encouraging 60-minute chat. The story in GOP circles goes like this: Some Republican big shots had been fishing to see if her husband was interested in the '06 race. And he basically told everyone, "Don't ask me, ask my wife."

<snip>

Salmon, who lost a nail-biter to Napolitano in 2002, gushed about the political possibilities of a Quayle candidacy.

"I have to tell you that if someone of her talent and credibility enters this race, it is most definitely a horse race," Salmon said. "When people realize this is possible, there will be folks all over the state who try to encourage her to run. Somebody of her caliber in the race is more than I could hope for."

2. she has always been the real power behind her husband
i don't think Dan Quayle cared either way whether he was in elected office or not but his wife pushed him into doing things.

3. Marilyn is infinitely smarter...
... than her husband, but she's also infinitely crazier.

I would hope that Napolitano and her staff could dig up all her old quotes to use against her.

4. But can she get beyond the faux pas's that her husband said......
in the early 90's? If she was the brains behind the man then, she didn't do a very good job of keeping his comments at a very intellectual level.

I hope that Janet really pushes the fact that she vetoed the recent bill which would have allowed guns to brought into bars in the state. I know of more than a few repugs here who thought that was an insane idea brought into the legislature by the ones they voted for in the first place and are re-thinking those votes.

5. Not to be cruel, but can you remember what George Carlin
said about Marilyn? He said "she's so ugly I wouldn't touch her with a ten foot rent a dick". Memories.
