Protest "Justice Sunday" April 24...Make Your Voice Heard!
Edited on Sat Apr-16-05 10:57 AM by Roland99
We are all aware of "Justice Sunday" ( http://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=LH05D02 )

The FRC plans on simulcasting this to churches and persons interested. I don't normally advocate protesting outside of a church but the radical nutcases are forcing our hands. We MUST not let them succeed in this attempt to stage a religious coup in the faux name of Christ.

Clicking the following link (and registering with a throwaway email address) will get you information sent to you on where in your area this simulcast will be held (sent the Fri. before the event)
http://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=EV05D03&f=LH05D02

It's originating at Highview Baptist Church in Louisville, KY. I'm presuming at their new mega-location in the east end, a $10 million construction project.

Don't let the Christian Reconstructions turn our great Republic into an authoritarian theocracy!

From a Courier-Journal article:
http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050416/NEWS01/504160386

Highview's senior pastor, the Rev. Kevin Ezell, said the 6,000-member church "very much supports" the national telecast. "It is obvious there is a bias against faith-based people," Ezell said. "I'd rather not go any further than that."

Other speakers will include Dr. James C. Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, which produces a religious radio program broadcast in more than 164 countries; and Chuck Colson, the born-again Watergate defendant and founder of Prison Fellowship Ministries.

The telecast will be distributed to churches around the country, through the Internet and over Christian television and radio networks.

The broadcast and a 30-minute service preceding it will be taped in Highview's new $10 million building on Shelbyville Road, which seats 2,000.

Founded about 50 years ago, Highview is a conservative Baptist church. On its Web site, the church says its members believe "the Scriptures are literally God-breathed and contain no mixture of error. The truth of Scripture and the person of Christ are the foundations of the church and stand in direct opposition to the moral ills of society."

1. Preemptive strike
it might be productive to make a leaflet with the FACTS about judicial nominations, to be distributed BEFORE the event (perhaps put under windshield wipers of cars parked near churches where this travisty will be aired)

Point out:

A vast majority of Bush's judicial nominees have been appointed (anyone with research expertise might find out the percentage and compare it with percentages of nominees confirmed under Clinton, Bush I, and Reagan)

In NO CASE was the religious affiliation of said nominees brought up in the hearings.

This might get some people questioning what is going on. Worth a try. (Or maybe a LTTE)

2. Yeah...the whole 10 out of 200 seems to be blown out of proportion
and is the basis for their claim of an obstructionist Democratic party.

Fucking morans.

3. It's KY
I live here. My uncle believes whatever the minister says because the minister claims it is in the Bible but my uncle never double checks.

People here depend too much on ministers. Some even need help to decide who to vote for. Some ministers say it's evil to vote liberal. Others are more open minded. In KY, Christianity is big and this event may cause violence (Evangelicals are prone to it) and increase in hatred of liberals and those with a college education. A good number here already believe that Dems would ban the Bible. I did convince several that it can't happen due to Consitutional protections and now they support anyone that won't change the Consitution.

5. The timing is interesting too
Sunday is the First day of Passover, a day of observance for observant Jews. So any Jewish leader who might feel inclined to speak out or protest would not be able to do so on that day.

6. We could also call them...
1-800-225-4008

I'm guessing if a few thousand people started calling them for information it would make for a long week for these people...

Not that that is my goal or anything. I'm genuinely interested. I'm just forgetful and may have to call back a few times to make sure I have all the information correct...

Ask them to join this action:

"CLN and DriveDemocracy Call for National Prayer Vigil

Clergy and Laity Network and DriveDemocracy call for a National Prayer Vigil on April 24th in response to the proposed national telecast by the Family Research Council.

Senator Bill Frist has joined with this organization and they are attacking the faith of Democrats and progressives in a cynical, partisan effort to win support for a handful of extremist judicial nominees. The Council is on record saying that Democrats are "against people of faith.""

"Friday, April 15 – A coalition of progressive religious leaders and organizations today expressed outrage that Republican leaders are attacking the faith of Democrats and progressives in a cynical, partisan effort to win support for a handful of extremist judicial nominees.

“Such an action is immoral, deceitful, and beyond the pale of even politics as usual,” said Rev. Albert M. Pennybacker, Executive Director and Chair of Clergy and Laity Network and coordinator for the Building the Beloved Community Coalition. “We call on Senator Frist to immediately cancel his plans to attend the event, and we urge all Republicans to condemn this wholesale attack on the religious practices of their political opponents.”

According to the New York Times, Sen. Majority Leader Bill Frist will join an organization called “The Family Research Council” in a national telecast on April 24. The Council is calling it “Justice Sunday,” are saying Democrats want to use the Senate filibuster “against people of faith.”

“As people of faith, we protest the religious manipulation of the filibuster issue,” said Pennybacker. “Attacks by Republicans on the religion of those who differ politically are offensive in America.”"

It will come in handy, and will go with my sermon for tomorrow.

Republicans' march toward theocracy runs through Louisville
http://www.courier-journal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050417/COLUMNISTS08/504170362/1054/OPINION

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist will join right-wing evangelicals such as Southern Seminary president Al Mohler, Focus on the Family's James Dobson and born-again Watergate felon Chuck Colson at Highview Baptist Church, to broadcast their charge that Democrats are "against people of faith."

<...>

It's important to take a careful look at who is invoking Christianity, and for what purpose. Yes, some of the noblest impulses of the American experience have arisen out of Christian faith. But it's also true that fanatics, zealots and bigots have marched under the Christian banner, from the Salem witch trials to the Protestant Know Nothing movement to the cross-brandishing Klan.

It would be interesting to ask some Democratic officeholders whether they are "against people of faith." Imagine putting that question to the Rev. Emanuel Cleaver, pastor of St. James United Methodist Church in Kansas City, who is a Democratic member of the U.S. House. Or Kentucky Treasurer Jonathan Miller, who is finishing a book on how faith should inform politics.

But then defensively offering a list of Democrats who are faith-friendly just plays into the hands of cynical Republican strategists. The point is, our Founding Fathers intended to protect religious freedom, not impose religious orthodoxy. In America, religious faith is supposed to be a matter of personal choice, not majority rule.
