Bush lobbying effort skirts law
Administration has spent at least $2.2 million so far
By Rex Nutting, MarketWatch
Last Update: 11:00 AM ET April 10, 2005

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The Bush administration has spent millions of dollars in the past two months on its campaign to overhaul Social Security, narrowly skirting laws that prohibit spending of taxpayer funds to indirectly lobby Congress.

President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and more than 20 other administration officials have blanketed the country since early February, delivering more than 100 speeches in 37 states in an effort to rally the public behind Bush's Social Security plans.

Although no hard figures on costs are available, rough calculations show the White House and other agencies have spent at least $2.2 million on the campaign so far.

The nonpartisan Government Accountability Office has been asked by Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., to investigate the costs of the pro-privatization effort. Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee have also asked quietly for an accounting, according to the Washington Post.

Waxman, the top Democrat on the House Government Reform Committee, asked the GAO to determine whether "the Bush administration has crossed the line from education to propaganda."

1. I like that -
"determine whether the Bush administration crossed the line from education to propoganda". Well DUH.

A fabricated crisis based on fear and lies. So what is it? Education or propoganda? Shouldn't be too hard for them to figure out. :eyes:

3. And what's great about this article is that the "Day Traders" and Financia
Guru's will read it! CBS Marketwatch will get more coverage than WaPo, NYT's or any liberal sites reporting on this. And they gave it a lot of print/internet space!

2. Seems that if the education is about something that doesn't exist
it would fall more into the propaganda category, no?

4. Best part: Republicans looking into this:
"Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee have also asked quietly for an accounting, according to the Washington Post."

12. I found that interesting also, but I don't know what to make of it.
Are there republicans in Congress who believe Bush should stop breaking the law? That is pretty hard for me to believe.

5. Imagine that! The Bushies skirting laws. You don't say!.......
Hmmmm.....let me think. Bush administration. Skirt laws. Why does this sound familiar?

Perhaps because they've done it before? Leaking Valerie Plame's name. Ousting the medicare actuary for, heaven forbid, actually telling the truth to Congress. Putting their propoganda pieces on the air as acutal news stories.

Am I getting warm here folks?

10. There's no message for Bush to 'get'...
He pile driving HIS agenda, NO MATTER WHAT! He's the dictator, he's the one with the levers of power and complicit media, he's going through with his SS dismantling!

DON'T LET YOU'RE GUARD DOWN! Bush will twist some arms, bop some heads, and squeak through an SS bill in congress, IF the people aren't paying attention, which is all too often.

14. How many more speeches do we have to listen to?
How many more millions is he allowed to spend?

When is HE going to get the message that we don't want it?

When is he going back to Crawford?

When is he going to stop using the White House as a fancy Motel?

When he he going to stay and get some "hard work" done?
