Republicans Continuing Their Despotic Grab for Power! (Quotes)
Edited on Wed Apr-06-05 11:09 PM by Stand and Fight
They go too far! Here are some excerpts from the article that were particularly alarming to me -- especially if you read between the lines. These are the sorts of things Hitler and his Nazis said before they dismantled the opposition in Germany... Fascism? No doubt in my mind, but you decide for yourself:

- Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), who said this week that violence against judges might be linked to a perception that they make "political decisions."

- Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), a Judiciary Committee member and DeLay ally, said in an interview: "That kind of judge needs to be worried about what kind of role Congress will play in his future." King said it is not clear what steps his committee might take, but he said most people do not realize the power Congress can exert over courts if it chooses.

- "We have the constitutional authority to eliminate any and all inferior courts," he said, referring to district and circuit courts. King said some federal judges refuse to answer questions from Congress unless they are being impeached, so "that may force our hand."

- Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, said few lawmakers would support impeachments, but congressional hearings to probe judges' roles in the Schiavo case are likely. "I think this series of recent events will help those of us who would like to use existing constitutional authority to restore the proper balance between the branches of government," Pence said.

Look at their quotes. It is clear that they are making a grab for power in the most absolute ways imaginable. This is not my way of being an alarmist. It is not conjecture. It is before you in black and white, plain as the sky is blue. You can read clearly for yourself that these men would cripple and do away with our government as we know it. They have aided in trampling upon our liberties by the quick passage of the Patriot Act, labeling those who do not follow suite as "traitors," and now they are attempting to put down what may well be one of the last obstacles in an insidious plan. Those who do nothing only aid in a march toward fascism and an uncertain hazy future. How can we continue to let this happen? They are a gang of demagogues, reckless tyrants. Don't the people of this country see what will happen if the delicate system of checks and balances is further upset?

I am active in local politics and am working my tail off to get to Washington, D.C. as soon as possible. It is imperative that we take an active stand against the madness that is raging there. If that means diving into the cesspool that has become Washington politics, so be it. I cannot sit idly by why this country's very founding principles are wretched from the people. Why do the American people allow this to continue in the full light of day? I mean it has even made it into the Washington Post. That cannot be blamed on the media, because any idiot can see the writing on the wall from reading the article.

Congressional Democrats and moderate Republicans are not doing enough, and they need our help. Why are the people lethargic, apathetic? I am astounded that they are getting away with this. I am horrified, and at the same time quickened, in my dedication to rise politically so that I can help in putting a stop to this madness. Imenja posted (See: "I'm tired of political defeatism" -- http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=1709306&mesg_id=1709306) earlier tonight that if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem... I don't agree with him/her on everything, but I definitely agree with one of the central points made -- it is time to stop blaming a "right-wing" media, and start getting active. I've been active for some time, but contrary to popular belief one person cannot make a difference alone. We commit the greatest folly if we do nothing to hinder the path to absolute power that DeLay and his cronies seek. We must fight tooth and nail for this country or die trying.

DU, what say you?

2. Agreed, and keep kicking.
What can a good citizen do?

1. A person with little time or money can:
Write LTTE
Call or email your congressperson and senators
http://www.house.gov/house/MemStateSearch.shtml
http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

2. If you have time or money:
Volunteer for democratic/progressive groups
Donate $
(and do what #1 says)

Any other suggestions?

Also, I hope the judicial branch won't be willing to stand for this encroachment into their domain.

4. Be heard & seen
The truth can't win if it's only aired around election time. Get heard by the people regularly. The other side is constantly being heard, & that can wear one down, that can instill doubts & shape beliefs.

Just what I've been telling my local party types. Most of them are older though... But they're Democrats nonetheless.

Oh yes!

7. I say some of those real conservative judges will fight back.
The Schiavo judges were all conservatives appointed by Republicans.

Republicans appointed 58% of all the federal judges serving right now, and the fascist Republicans in congress STILL whine about them just to please their theo=fascist base.
