Let's flash back two-three years, shall we?
A man called Trent Lott had the plum gig of being Senate Majority Leader. At a party, he made a statement worthy of being thrown a pie at, but not necessarily losing his job. Especially not if one is a Republican from Mississippi, a state not exactly reknowned for its sensitivity on racial issues.
Until Lott's gaffe, Republicans, especially under Bush and Rove, walked and talked in lock step; suddenly Rove threw one of their own to the press and a nationwide, mainstream media scandal was created where one would have expected the scandal to remain among the leftish news sources and commentary.
Two days before Trent Lott stepped down, in the Tennessee papers it was announced that HCA, the health care company founded by the Frist family cut a multi-million dollar deal to settle medicare/medicaid (I can never remember which) fraud suits with the federal government. It was a herald that attracted little attention nationally, but propaganda watchers knew immediately what was in the tea leaves: the fix was in. And so Bill Frist, the "cuddly" Republican fascist, became Senate Majority Leader.
Meanwhile, Tom Delay was enjoying the fruits of his Texan labor, getting ready to gerrymander his home state's legislature. And Karl saw that it was good.
As long as Tommy's hijinks were confined strictly to the political field, he's had free reign to do everything he's wanted. He even got his own Get-Out-of-Losing-Your-Job-for-Ethics-Violations Free Card. Later rescinded when someone up above suggested it might be going just a little too far.
Well, dammit, he's finally gone too far. I don't know who drove the Republicans in DC to the Terri Schiavo fiasco, but Delay received a great deal of credit for it. But gee, wasn't it a suprise when we found out that something like 70% of the country thought the GOP had gone too far to the extreme in interfering with our personal lives?
And now, Tommy's shooting off his mouth, all but advocating violence against US judges.
I mean, if I didn't know better, I'd say someone's been mixing some of Michael Jackson's Jesus Juice into Delay's Viagra prescription, you know?
Tom Delay right now is one of the best things to happen to Liberal causes in the US since, well, since November 2000 when we got pissed off for the first time in a long time. Tom Delay is great; nothing and no one on Capitol Hill better underscores the religious right's agenda to moralize the American populace by legislation. Nothing and no one underscores right-wing GOP arrogance better than Delay.
It couldn't be more obvious to me that Karl Rove and his underlings are behind the current movement to oust Delay than if the demon prince sat down right next to me and whispered in my ear.
The liberal organizations like MoveOn that are trying to lead a drive to oust Delay are doing Rove's work for him.
Allow me to remind you of a Buzzflash commentary from December of 2002:
Quite simply, the Bush right wing political pundits that Karl Rove has on his leash are suddenly glorifying America's great tradition of civil rights and telling Trent Lott to walk the plank. You would expect these hack journalists to be choking on their words, since they have regularly spewed venom on civil rights, prominent black elected officials -- and unrelentingly advocated for the racially code worded issue of "states rights." But Rove is worried silly that if Bush is revealed for leading the anti-minority, anti-civil rights jihad that he is really undertaking, the suburban women and independents will jump to the Democratic candidate in 2004, giving the Democrats a shot at picking up one of the smaller marginal red states and winning the presidential election.http://www.buzzflash.com/analysis/2002/12/13_Lott.htmlFor my beans, 'tis much better to keep Delay right where he is, reminding the 51% of American voters who chose to keep Bush in office of exactly what it was they voted for, than it would be to achieve the minor political victory (and only a perceived victory, at that) of having him tossed.
You never know what cat-killer Rove will put in his place. I like this madman Tom Delay. I do.
