Deadly force bill passes House ( NRA wrote the bill)

-snip-

The proposal, preliminarily approved Thursday by the full House of Representatives, was written by the National Rifle Association and is aimed at expanding and clarifying the centuries-old "Castle Doctrine."

Currently, the doctrine presumes that a person can use deadly force when someone unlawfully invades his home because the resident is presumed to have his back "against a wall." If not at home, a person generally has a duty to retreat from a confrontation. The doctrine is not fully enshrined in law.

But the proposed law says that a person who is lawfully in any place has "no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm."

The Senate last week approved the bill, which the House will likely send to the governor soon. Gov. Jeb Bush has not commented directly on the bill.

1. The beauty of our systems is that anybody, yes even yuo
can write a bill.

Now having the power to have them listen to you and pass your bill is a whole different matter

By the way, the NRA has written them, and so have many of other special interet groups over the years

3. I am sure they were given the power at the same time...
... the credit card companies, right wing religious wackos and the rest were given the power------the minute we had repuke majorities in congress, the judiciary and the POTUS.

9. No...
they were given the power when a large portion of gun owners stopped voting for the Democratic party.

4. This will open up a can of worms.
I hope they made sure to put some pretty good safety measures and accountability in that bill.

5. Oh shit, that's Florida law now? There will be road rage shootings
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 12:33 PM by whistle
...gallore on the highways and by-ways of the state, followed by a 1000.0% increase in gas station, convenience store and street shootings all justified by this law.

We need homicide and self-defense shootings statistics marked as a benchmark ASAP pre and post this law.

Just thought of another location where this will have an impact, voting registration centers and voting polls in Florida.

7. Ever since term limits became law.
We have legislators with no experience in lawmaking and their lobbyists write the bills they want passed. Some of them don't even know what they just introduced.

8. I had a post about this pending bill yesterday.
I saw that quite a few really did not seem alarmed at it. I think it makes us look like fools again.

Lobbyists write bills all the time here. One of the legislatures in our area had a water bill written by lobbyists for water companies. He was Katherine's cousin, oh, yes Baxter Troutman. He did not seem aware anything was wrong with it.

But this is Florida, we are a whole other country.
