An Intergenerational Approach to Social Security Education and Advocacy
Washington, DC - OWL, The Voice of Midlife and Older Women, launched its Social Security Matters Campaign, which focuses on engaging all women - no matter their age - in the Social Security debate. Social Security Matters' major components include an interactive website, www.socialsecuritymatters.org, and a ten city educational event tour.
The goal of Social Security Matters is to bring younger, midlife, and older women together and to educate them on the dangers privatization and its disastrous effects on women. OWL is gravely concerned about the impact individual private accounts would have on women. Due to low wages and time out of the workforce for caregiving, women are dependant on the guaranteed, inflation-protected, lifetime benefits of Social Security. Women also face a wage gap, earning only 75 cents for every dollar men earn. In addition, women are less likely to have income from savings or other assets compared to their male counterparts, since you can't save money you don't earn.
"With this campaign we will educate women, especially younger and midlife women on issues around Social Security. We will stop privitizers attempts at inter-generational warfare and enable women to unite against one common threat - privatization," said Laurie Young, OWL Executive Director.
The Social Security Matters interactive website, www.socialsecuritymatters.org will allow visitors to become fully versed in the debate over Social Security privatization and to realize how important protecting Social Security is - especially for women. The website also features e-activist tools. OWL members and supporters will be able to send messages to their Members of Congress and send messages about Social Security to women - young and old - in their lives.
In addition, the campaign will be embarking on a ten city educational tour this spring. The tour will feature a panel of women in their 20s, 50s, and 70s, all speaking about how Social Security privatization will affect their generation.
- - - I belong to this group (since I quit AARP over the Medicare mess) and they are advocates for women's issues. This looks pretty good.
