I hate to beat a dead horse, but can somebody assist me?
The dead horse being the issue surrounding Terri Schiavo.
Well, apparantly I just don't have my facts right in regards to this case.
Somebody told me that approximately 90% of people that were in a situation similar to Terri Schiavo's would want to remain on life support.
Well, all be damned! I was under the impression it was the other way around. So, upon asking this somebody for a link in regards to this statistic, I was told that it's an obvious fact, and would I also like a link to prove that the sky is blue?
Ahem, pardon moi, but I don't think it's an obvious fact.
Am I going crazy? Or can somebody truly provide this OBVIOUS link for me?
Peacefully,
C. aka ask a girl

1. You're right, that person is an ass and a knave.
Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 09:49 AM by Stand and Fight
82% of Americans don't think the government should have intervened -- throw that FACT back at them and tell them to piss off.

ON EDIT: Also bring up Oregon's law on euthanasia -- enough people agree with it there to put it into the law. So, that blows that 90% bullshit out of the water.

9. well
don't believe for a second that I assumed that statistic to be true. especially since it goes against everything i previously believed. However, I've been trying to keep an open mind lately and questioning everything, assuming nothing.
you're right though, i really feel sorry for people that are exposed to right wing radio and television as their only source.
for instance, my boyfriend listens to right wing radio just to hear what the other side is saying (and because it's good for a laugh), and my mother (who is conservative) and I have been debating the Terri Schiavo issue and she's said some pretty extreme things. Upon relating these things to my boyfriend, I find that she's quoting pundits and anchors verbatum from these shows! sigh.. :(

10. Quoting verbatim is the scary part...
I hear the right-wingers I work with in Oklahoma doing that all the time, and they HATE to be confronted with facts. Drives the critters up the whole -- kind of like exposing cockroaches to light suddenly.

11. geez
and why have we become a society that hates to be wrong or confronted with facts.
sigh....it's so tragic.
but i've been playing it smart with my madre and when we discuss I now email her. this way i can show her scads of links to help back up what i'm saying and she's starting to question what's going on in right wing talk radio.
however, my dad on the other hand? just a few days ago, I was mentioning teh fact that Terri Schiavo didn't have a cerbral cortex? and he said: "That's teh first I've heard it mentioned."
:wtf:

People have accused Americans of being stupid, but I have always countered that they are simply uninformed. This just gives credence to that line of thought.

19. right
Lately Im trying not to have animosity for certain people because I don't think America is stupid, just stupid given the circumstances.
we provide inadequate education to our citizens, and then allow radio shows to spout out selctive information. what the hell?

20. Americans typically do not know how to think critically.
Not in grade school, high school, or college. They're not taught how to think logically and analytically.

21. but why
why has there been this lapse in logic skills? Possibly so the right-wing can get away with so much utter bullshit?
I know that's rather extreme, but I think things would be a little different if we're all taught critical thinking skills.
Is it no wonder that on a map the majority of blue states are in areas where universities flourish?

23. True...
However, study history. Study revolutions. Intellectuals -- those who think critically -- are always the first to go, and we are in the midst of a cold revolution here in America. You, other DUers, and myself are the opposition, and we are losing. The powers that be know that if the masses stay ignorant, then they will not rise up and throw off the shackles of the mind that prevail. It is apparent in the undue importance placed on trivial matters -- see Terri Schiavo, Scott Peterson, Michael Jackson, steroids and baseball... When you consider that these issues are more important than an ongoing and illegal war in Iraq and a clearly impeachable administration in the Whitehouse it is simply astounding.

13. WTF?
90%? That's got to be horseshit. My experience is anecdotal, but it's fairly broad when it comes to the discussion of being a 'vegetable.' To this day, I have not met anyone, besides myself, who would not want life support discontinued. Not a one.

Whoever told you that has a bridge in Brooklyn to sell, too.

I see now that my friends were right about the indoctrination aspect of law school. Sorry about that.

27. More ammo, from polling report
...a clearinghouse website for issues of the day:

http://pollingreport.com/news.htm

For specificss about whether "90% of people would want to remain on life support," Scroll down to the ABC poll of March 20:

"If you were in this condition, would you want to be kept alive, or not?"

"Kept Alive" gets a whopping 16%.
"Not Kept Alive"? 78%

The rest of the polling indicates just how badly DeLay, the BFEE, Frist, Ryun, and the rest of these evil ghouls miscalculated.

Golly, you think maybe insulating yourself with yes-men who don't listen to alternative arguments might make you out of touch with the nation?
