My letter to DeLay and the response I got
So, I wrote my "representative" the other day...here is what I sent him:

As a constituent, I am appalled at the lengths to which you have gone to extend the suffering of Terri Schiavo. I do not understand why the court rulings were not enough, even though the appeals went all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States. Why do you feel that the government should have a say in whether this woman lives or dies? Shouldn't this be a decision to be made by her family? While there are conflicting opinions between her husband and her parents, the courts have ruled numerous times. Why will no one accept these rulings?

This morning, I saw video footage of you comparing this case to the "political attack" you claim to be under. You should be ashamed of yourself! You are not under a political attack, you are under investigation! You claim that there is an attack on conservatives taking place in this country. This is also not true. When Democrats had the majority, the Republicans did everything they could to attack them. This seems to be what you people do. Democrats/Progressives/Liberals are merely trying to defend themselves against the attacks from the other side that have not stopped. Conservatives seem to think that it is their job to convert the rest of us to believe as they do.

I will not be converted to believe as they do. It is my right, as a citizen, to believe as I choose to believe. If the conservatives could understand that and move on, something might actually get done in this session of Congress. Until then, I suppose that the Democrats will be blamed for nothing getting done, regardless of the fact that most of what is being crammed down their throats goes against their very moral fiber.

I hope to one day see the return of DEMOCRACY to this country.

------------------------------------------------------------

I really had to use restraint, after all, I voted for Morrison, and wanted to tell him so, but I held that in.

Here's the response I got back:

Dear (Not_Giving_Up):

Thank you for contacting me with your concerns regarding the way Congress has responded to the situation of Terri Schiavo. It is very helpful when considering important issues to know the views and concerns of my constituents, and I appreciate you taking the time to write.

The case of Terri Schiavo is a wrenching family crisis, but given the
uniquely compelling circumstances, it is also much more than that.
Terri Schiavo is not terminally ill. She is not on artificial life
support. No extraordinary measures are being taken to keep her alive. She needs a feeding tube to eat, but so do thousands of incapacitated people. The decision by a Florida judge to allow her to starve to death is simply unconscionable.

As you may know, the 14th Amendment guarantees all Americans their
God-given rights to equal protection and due process under the law. Terri Schiavo, without access to the federal appeals made every day by
death-row inmates, was being denied both. In light of this, on March 21, 2005, the House of Representatives passed legislation that creates a cause of action in federal court to allow
Terri's parents to bring suit on behalf of their daughter for violation
of any right under the United States Constitution or laws of the United States relating to "the withholding or withdrawal of food, fluids, or
medical treatment necessary to sustain her life." President Bush signed this legislation into law the same day.

As a result of this law, Mrs. Schiavo's parents filed a temporary
restraining order in federal district court to restore her nutrition and hydration so that she would not starve to death before her federal rights could be adjudicated as Congress directed. In addition, the United States Department of Justice filed a Statement of Interest supporting Mrs. Schiavo's parents' motion for a temporary restraining order. Most recently, both the federal district court judge and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit have denied their request for a temporary restraining order. These decisions are disappointing because they are at odds with both the clear intent of Congress and the constitutional rights of Terri Schiavo.

Again, thank you for contacting me with your concerns regarding the
Congressional response to the Terri Schiavo situation. It is an honor
to serve you in the United States House of Representatives.

-------------------------------------------------------------

I'm sorry...Did I sound like I needed a fucking synopsis? I know what's going on, I wanted to know WHY, and to let him know that I disagree.

1. That's his office's canned Terri letter.
In other words, it might have felt good to vent but you were ignored. What a surprise, eh?

13. since he went...
to the equal protection under the law card. You should ask him why gays and lesbians aren't afforded the same constitutional protection as Terri Schiavo. It is doubtful that would elicit a canned response.

Kevin.

2. Discouraging, isn't it, when it's so clear that our 'representatives'
don't begin to listen to us, but follow their noses to money and votes.
I hate form letters from politicians. If they're not going to read it and give some honest response, I'd rather get no response at all.
That's just insulting.

5. I got form letters
from Kay Bailey Hutchinson and Diane Feinstein after writing them asking them to stand on January 6th. Funny...My "senator" wrote me back telling me all about how she was for election reform. Feinstein wrote me to tell me that dubya won anyway and she didn't see the point.

4. The minute the intern reading discovered you aren't a Rethuglian,
you letter was dismissed and a form letter sent. If you were a Repug, you better believe you would have received a response acknowledging your opinion... and if your COnservative disagreed with Delay, you would have been told why you are "mistaken" and how correct the Holy * is in the actions he took to "perserve life."

:grr:

7. Thanks NGU
I totally appreciate your effort. Trent Lott is my Senator so I can understand your pain and embarrassment. I would like to offer a little suggestion. Shorten your letter. (Take the text of your letter and delete what is not needed and you will be amazed - AS A CONSTITUENT, THIS MORNING, etc. Limit it to no more than two short paragraphs and have it amplify your point. Give em something to choke on, not something to gloss over. Have a representative's staffer want to vomit after just a few lines. Make sure they know you are a voter. Thanks again. Anybody fucking with tom delay is a friend of mine.

9. Believe it or not
That's the short version. I was in full rant mode when I typed it...thinned it out before I sent it. I tend to be long winded!

10. I Love You Man
but thin some more. Grab a theme, cut the crap and get to the point. Any letter to a congressman should include ONLY one point and should be no more than two paragraphs. Practice, practice, practice. Thank you again for your efforts. Writing a letter is a pain in the ass. Writing a letter to tom delay's office is a fucking monumental exercise in futility however you are a totally fucking awesome trooper and this veteran salutes you. Keep that keyboard cooking.

I'm working on thinning it down...I was just so pissed I couldn't help it. Future letters will be concise! My keyboard will not be silenced!

16. NO - THANK YOU!!
and my apologies for the gender issue. Kick Ass intently. I don't mean to dictate your correspondence, but lengthy letters tend to be eventually ignored by staffers. (As an example I could have not used the word eventually in that sentence and not changed the meaning of the thought. blah-blah-blah)

Please know Not Giving Up, that if you are corresponding with tom delay's office, you have the support of millions of Americans. You may not know it, but we are all behind you. Fuck me and my "how to write a letter bullshit" - just give em hell. Go get em "Chick."

18. It's all good
No need to apologize for the gender thing...I just get snarky sometimes!

You are right...I do need to shorten it. I figure, hell, they aren't reading past the first sentence anyway, so I might as well give em hell! (I'm suprised my e-mails still go through!)

It's good to know that there are millions behind me!!!

20. You Go Girl !!!
As you contemplate your thoughts with cosmic ideas chock full of minutae, keep in mind the most significant driving force:

Shove that first sentence where you want the sun to shine. delay and his staffers are not fond of sunshine so if someone were to send a "copy to" local media/print outlets of a letter they sent to the congressman - but there I got meddling again.

This Veteran and millions more are cheering you on. Thank You. I love You. Keep that keyboard hot.

I'd really like to have a better understanding of the approach they are taking.

Mine is Pombo, who is also bad, but Delay...well, it doesn't get much lower than that does it? Cockroach level.

What do you think the chances are of throwing this guy out in 06' assuming he lasts until then? How are people in the district feeling about this guy? Any local negative press?

14. It's funny
There were people who admitted that they voted for him out of habit. Morrison made him wake up and campaign, even debate, which is something he hasn't really had to do (seriously anyway) for a while.

Most people here know that he's a crooked pig...Large numbers hoping he goes down!
