RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman Speaks To Students At Virginia State University

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Tracey Schmitt
202-863-8614

Washington -- RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman today attended a political science class at Virginia State University, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) located in Petersburg, Virginia.

The class visit was organized to give students more information on how Republicans are working to ensure that every student has access to a quality education and a voice in the political dialogue of this country.

“I applaud the work of HBCUs in producing talented and high-achieving graduates to serve the nation in fields ranging from Politics to Medicine to English and the Arts,” said Chairman Mehlman. “President Bush and Republican leadership are committed to strengthening the nation’s 105 HBCUs across the country. Under the President’s leadership, funding for HBCUs has increased 30 percent.”

HBCUs enroll 14 percent of all African-American students in higher education. Virginia State University was founded in 1882 as the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute.

Later this month, the Chairman will visit Howard University, a HBCU in Washington, DC, as part of the ongoing “Conversations With The Community” tour.
