There is no good reason we cannot have a direct democracy in this country with a vote from every person every evening, or every hour on issues of concern. The only problem with that is our inability to trust those who count the votes, our willingness to accept slight majorities driving the direction of government, and the fact that in sharing rights with the machine we are limiting the ability of government from the start to resolve our problems. The constitution was written by owners seeking to protect owners from foreigners and riff rafts. The protection was direct and undeniable, and we have already fought one war over the issue, and may someday fight another. I believe that all protection of property rests on the protection of civil and personal rights, and that government should be a government over business. To give business freedom means encumbering people more and more under a web of laws and police. Do you not believe that when you assemble to protest and have broken no laws and there are police on every corner that you are not being intimidated? Do you believe that when you assemble to talk on the Internet and big brother is watching that you are not being intimidated? Is this right? Education is nice, but assembly is essential. All those rights I must share with the machine I surrender. Let them have their freedom of religion and press. Let big business speak with a loud voice and muffle me. We do not need to organize. We need to claim the right to go and be where we want to make a point, and we need the courage to do so as individuals.
