Ann Coulter and the Cherokee Nation
After spending half a column berating prior federal interventions into state matters but justifying the conservatives’ politicization of the Terri Schiavo case, conservative columnist Ann Coulter instructs Florida Governor Jeb Bush to ignore “the illiterate ramblings of a state judiciary.” She supports her advice by providing him with this precedent:

President Andrew Jackson is supposed to have said of a Supreme Court ruling he opposed: “Well, John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it.” The court’s ruling was ignored. And yet, somehow, the republic survived.

What was the context in which President Andrew Jackson uttered those famous words to Supreme Court Justice John Marshall?

In 1832 the Cherokee Indian tribe lived on land guaranteed them by treaty. They found gold on that land. Georgia tried to seize the land. The Cherokees sued. And eventually the Supreme Court, in Worcester v. Georgia, held in favor of the Cherokees. Georgia then refused to obey the Court. President Andrew Jackson reportedly said, “John Marshall has made his decision; now let him enforce it.” And Jackson sent troops to evict the Cherokees, who traveled the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma, thousands dying along the way.

10. OMG! does he see the flaw in his own reasoning?
He points out micheal and terri shiavo are still married....doesn't he realize that also means he should have final say in her treatment, as a legal spouse?

wingnuts are missing the logic gene.

11. John Gibson's argument is that while legally they're married, that
because Michael Schiavo is living with another woman and has children with her,
that practically he and Terri Schiavo aren't married, and so the law should be ignored and Jeb Bush should send in state troopers.

I don't agree with any of the above, but that is what John Gibson is arguing.

25. Would that mean that if Terri had a child with Michael while
in PVS that the child would be considered illegitimate because he was living with another woman?

Seems to be the springboard for every position espoused by the asswipe Schindlers and their not-so-merry band of KKKristian thugs and media cohorts.

29. Scariest part of Gibson's piece
"Oh John, you're not saying judges aren't real people, are you?

Well, judging by what happened here, I'd say yes, that's exactly what I'm saying."

Wasn't that the exact argument the Nazi's used to justify the genocide of the Jews? I mean, if their not "real" people, than it's not "real" murder is it? Im I imagining things or is that the coded message here?

37. Are Americans racist pigs or just nuts?
Your President G. W. Bush flew to Washington from Crawford Texas to sign legislation passed by the Congress to "save Terri". He wants to "err on the side of life." Yet couldn't find the time to visit the Red Lake Indian Reserve to succour residents and victims of the shooting. Don't you Yanks like Indians?

"Save Terri", "respect life", and in the words of John Gibson, "storm the Bastille, Jeb". If you are white your life andit's protection is important. If you are an Indian and killed by guns...it isn't.

God Bless America

3. Never going beyond the Headlines
Seems that Ann is as guilty as the rest of the zealots, they read the headlines, make a decision based on feelings, and then refuse to delve any deeper in the situation.

You point out the repercussions from the President ignoring the order simply was out of Ann's reality...... but then again 9 Indian's being slaughtered in MN even today doesn't bring much notice of an American President.

Why do Republicians think that destroying a people for money is a good idea? Is it in the Bible? Why must we let these people even be citizens if they constantly want to break the law?

19. As a Tennesseean, who is a typical Tennesseean of both
Cherokee and Scotch-Irish blend, I am in full agreement with you.
I do not idolize Andrew Jackson and find his attitute contemptous, even for the day and age in which he lived.
He was nothing but a drunken bully - kind of like Ann Coulter's hero GeeDub.

24. Too bad Jackson never said that
it was falsely attributed to him. And he didn't send troops for the trail of tears either, but he was a militant supporter of Indian Removal. Martin Van Buren sent troops to force the Indians on the trail of tears. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trail_of_Tears

"However, Jackson had no intention of protecting the Cherokees from Georgia, though the famous defiant quote attributed to him ("John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it!") was never uttered by him and is in fact a famous non-quotation." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Jackson

36. exactly right about Jackson
The Cherokees were uprooted from their rightful homeland thanks to the shameful actions of Andrew Jackson and what was called quite bluntly: The Indian Removal Act.
They were forced to move in terrible winter months, guaranteeing the deaths of the old and very young. Imagine someone with a gun coming into your home and with the backing of the government, telling you you had to pack only what you could carry and start walking the distance from North Carolina to Oklahoma. Fun times, huh?
Ann Coulter is a bitch, so we have to consider the source when anything at all is attributed to her.
