The poll numbers on this Schiavo case are overwhelmingly bad for the rethugs, which tells me that most folks are middle of the road, leaning left. The polls I've seen indicate that roughly 40% of the electorate consider themselves "evangelical Christians," and while some evangelicals are liberal, the majority seem to follow their leaders, like Dobson and Falwell.

as to switching during a war - I've heard this directly from fence sitters, moderate rethugs, and independants...they were thinking it would create too much chaos to switch mid-stream.

As to the 40% evangelicals...a-mare-cans are just not church goers by and large, outside of the "base"...they go every once in a while and hold mostly moderate views. 2008 will of course be a true test of my theories as the switching mid stream view will be a non issue. The best part is that there is NO WAY the rethugs are going to throw up a moderate candidate, but if the dems do, a la Clinton, we will win.
