6. And also, let me add Specter.
Granted, not a Democrat, but come the fuck on. The guy's got some sense - apparently not as much as I thought.

16. I added him.
I was also surprised Specter voted against it, but at least he has the excuse of being a Republican.

Kudos also to McCain & Snowe for doing the right thing.

8. Any DINO who would destroy the environment
isn't worth a F-ing dime.

They shouldn't get any party support in reelection bids, IMO.

All for drilling that won't produce anything for 10 years, and then enough only to supply the US for 6 months...and it'll all be sold to Asia, anyway.

9. A common repuke tactic is to allow R members to vote their conscience
on rare occasions like these, just to make the vote look close, and to make it look like repukes are not the soulless automatons we know them to be. This was commonplace during the campaign, so they could make it look like Kerry's absences were costing the Dems key votes.

Here, if we'd been able to flip Landrieu (Akaka is a lost cause on this, and Reid should have known that), Frist would just have wrung the neck of a nearby orange tabby, then picked up the phone to lean on, say, McCain. Under no circumstances would they have allowed this to actually pass.

11. Yeah and any R with a spine
would have told Frist to F off.

Oh, but then, there aren't any R's with spines, are there?

At least, damn few, and none in the Senate.

17. What is their reasoning? What is their excuse?
Really: what would they say if you just flat-out asked them why they'd voted that way?

I suppose it would just be some bullshit about "we need to reduce our dependence on foreign oil." Is there more?

18. Hawaii?
I'm wondering what's the angle that the two senators from Hawaii had. I don't think it's a coincidence that two of those three Democrats you mentioned are from Hawaii.

24. I called them on it in my letters
Senator Akaka,

I am surprised and saddened that you voted for oil drilling in the ANWR. As a senator from the lush and beautiful state of Hawaii, I can't imagine how you believe that tearing up the equally beautiful and precious Arctic National Wildlife Area for minimal return to a few companies is appropriate.

I'm further disappointed that a Democrat would totally abandon our party's ideals in this manner. Six Republicans voted for saving the AMWR. That should tell you what an important issue this is for the American people.

The short supply of oil is a result of greed and America's failure to conserve, recycle and develop alternative forms of energy.

It's time the Senate begin to think about what's best for America and not what will benefit corporations. Our government has turned into a corporate run entity. Now I know what President Bush meant when he said he wanted an "ownership society."

Sincerely,
xxxxxx

31. It's complicated
Alaska & Hawaii always vote together when it comes to a state's interests.

Inouye & Stevens have worked together for years, supporting each other's special projects.

Oil in Louisiana

Gas prices in Hawaii, plus a cozy relationship with Stevens.

23. Gas prices? that's horseshit.
For one thing, a 6 month supply of oil that won't be accessible for 10 years won't have a thing to do with gas prices.

Secondly, gas will always be higher in Hawaii - as everything else is - (except pineapples) because of the extra shipping involved.

Plus, as you may have heard Senator Cantwell say, here in Washington state we have three goddamned refineries and yet some of the highest gas prices in the country. The prices are artificially controlled, and purely by coincidence, of course :eyes: they're higher in the "blue" states.

It's no secret the oil industry has been shafting us for decades. It's just that now they don't even bother hiding it.

I'm just saying it contradicts the way gas prices work. And costs to Hawaii in general.

33. reposted from another thread--
I think Akaka's reasoning was that it was a deal with Frist -- he votes for ANWR drilling, and Frist votes for the Hawai'i Recognition bill (aka the "Akaka bill")...

this "Akaka bill" is a piece of work, by the way... totally shameless Realpolitik if you ask me...

hope it was worth it... the Uncle Tom...

as for Mary Landrieu I wasn't surprised. I mean, it's either her or a Repug but sheesh, some party discipline please??

As for Inouye I don't know much about him other than that he's a war hero and, now, a party traitor. Shame on the lot of them.

You know all the reasons why and I will not re-iterate them here. Your vote AGAINST the Cantwill amendment is unconscionable. Thank god I am not one of your un-represented constituents. The Artic NATIONAL Wildlife Refuge belongs to EVERY American and it is America's voice you should have heeeded today - not oil industry lobbyists. SHAME ON YOU.

What the hell is the matter w/ these people? Why do we have 2 ROAR B4 they act like the Democrats we elected? Granted, I do not live in Hawaii or Louisiana...but come ooonnn. Gonna start giving away National Parks next?
