1. It's a wilderness/wildlife refuge. This sets a precedent for all your little favorite natural areas closer to home
2. It has become a symbolic battle of enviro's versus right wingers
3. It's oil output is questionable, even by the oil companies
4. congress REFUSES to pass improved MPG legislation, obviously owned by Detroit and big oil. A slight improvement would dwarf ANWR output
5. NASCAR. how in the HELL can we destroy our last wild spaces while we waste gas on idiotic things like Nascar?
6. the native people in that area depend on the wild game
7. It is something GWB has craved for years
