Zogby: 55-60% of American Oppose Arctic Drilling
From December 21, 2004.

A new Zogby International survey shows that Americans oppose opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil drilling by a solid 55% - 38% margin. Their opposition is even stronger, 59% - 25%, to a proposed "backdoor maneuver" that would use the annual Congressional budget process to let the oil industry into the Refuge.

Moreover, an overwhelming 80% say that conservation, improved fuel efficiency and the development of renewable energy alternatives are the best ways to reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil. Only 17% say that more drilling on America's public lands is the solution.

1. The two death blows for the Republicans will be SS & ANWR
They are overstepping their bounds and it will kill their party in the long run.

4. Funny how the right can moan about "The will of the people"...
... when it comes to same sex marrige, but completely ignores it when it comes to ANWR and the bankruptcy bill. They don't even have the (good) justification that it's a human rights issue, as in the same sex marrige case...

5. That will soon change as the price of oil goes up.
Environmentalists should dump ANWAR as a cause. Drilling there is inevitable. Focus your energy on increasing fuel efficiency and teaching people how to live without being so dependent on oil.

7. I don't think it's nessicarly a lost cause...
more of an oppertunity to teach people the facts while they're receptive to them. If people understand how little oil there is supposed to be in ANWR, then it won't matter how expensive oil gets, it's really not worth it for a supply that will take years to make usable and provide less than 25 weeks of oil at current consumption rates.

9. I agree. Fighting the power is never a lost cause.
But just admit that y'all are doomed to lose on this fight. There is no way in hell that the American people will put the needs of caribou over NASCAR.

ANWAR activists are honorable folks, but don't act surprised when they start drilling there in a few years. Use the press-coverage to highlight the real issues of oil-addiction.

6. Since when has the will of the American people meant squat

to our brand spanking new fascist government? To be fair, even before the coup I was amazed at how infrequently legislation reflected the majority's desires. Guess the fix has been in a lot longer than most realized. Frog in Pot R US.

13. Consent of the Governed...
Hopefully the 19th we can make a good showing of those of us who do not consent to this vile, immoral regime.

8. What Bullshit! These A-holes are the ones buying SUVs and bitching...
about the price of gas. I didn't hear anyone attacking John Kerry during the summer when he said if he were president he would apply pressure to OPEC to get them to pump more oil.

When was the last year that SUVs were not the highest selling vehicle class?

People are all for conservation, until they have to conserve.

14. Question....are Zogby polls truly scientific or meaningless "INTERNET"..
type of polls where everyone votes 100 times?? After all these years I think that DU should embrace a real poll and go with it whether the news is good or bad.

Most INTERNET polls are shams and are dictated by who happens to be home and can vote the most often....

15. This was a telephone poll of 1,203 likely voters chosen at random.
Zogby International conducted interviews of 1,203 likely voters chosen at random nationwide for The Wilderness Society and other leading national conservation groups. All calls were made from Zogby International headquarters in Utica, N.Y., from December 13-15, 2004. The margin of error is +/- 2.9 percentage points.
