Sen. Harry Reid says Dems 1 vote short
From the Ed Shultz website and I also heard on Air America today. 03/16/2005
Sen. Harry Reid says Dems 1 vote shortSen. Harry Reid, D-NV, just said on The Ed Schultz Show that the Senate Democrats are 1 vote short of stopping the vote to drill in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge. 2 key Democratic Senators who are not on board yet are Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-HI and Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-HI.

Click below to contact them to urge their no vote on drilling in ANWR.

9. Frankly, I think its a state vs national perspective
Most of the eastern and mid-Western mainland 48 states have exploited their resources during their histories.

To many people in western states denying them the same opportunity to make money off the resources inside their state borders seems unfair.

The conversations are not unlike those with people from undeveloped nations. "Sure you got fat and sassy by turning woodlands into farms and coal mines, and now you aren't going to let us develop a FRACTION of our land. Just so that you can stay on top."

24. Believe it or not
senators actually look at things from a national level even though they are from a certain state. Do you think a senator from Alaska in WW2 would go "Oh gee maybe hitler will just invade texas so I'll vote not to engage him"?

Anyone know for sure?

I have emailed both Senators Akaka and Inouye urging them to vote for the Cantwell/Kerry amendment to strip drilling in ANWR out of the budget resolution.

Inouye's been in the senate for what, forty years? I doubt the Republicans have been pressuring him; it just might be that in some weird way Hawaii will benefit from drilling in ANWR.

17. They are my Senators
& I have contacted them.

Inouye & Stevens go way back...they are both major pork Senators.

They have always worked together...I'll help you if you help me.

I think there is also a feeling that Hawaii & Alaska, are separated from the Lower 48 & don't like being told what to do.

When the Patriot Act passed, both Hawaii & Alaska legislatures rejected it.

18. Forgot to add:
Hawaii pays the HIGHEST gas prices in the country.

We paid $2.00 a gallon, long before any of you ever heard of $2.00 gas.

Maybe the Senators figure if oil out here is discovered, it would benefit Hawaii.

Because we have to fly or ship everything in, it adds huge amounts to the price of all goods & services here.

20. CAFE Standards
More the reason. If they don't stand up screaming for CAFE Standards, then their support of drilling has more to do with cozying up to Stevens than the price of gas. CAFE Standards would do 3 times more than ANWR.

21. The media never tell us about the oil companies record 2004 profits.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4223573.stm

Exxon Mobil profits exceed $25bn

Profits have soared despite a fall in oil production

US oil giant Exxon Mobil made a record $25.3bn (£13.4bn; 19.4bn euros) profit in 2004 as it benefited from the surge in crude oil prices.

The world's largest public oil company saw income from exploration, production and refining soar despite a decline in the amount of oil and gas produced.

Exxon Mobil's profits rose to $25.33bn from $21.51bn last year, on revenues up 17% to $298bn.

Akaka voted no because of his support for indigenous people in Alaska.

43. Why would Reid want to be on Schultz' show? Schultz supports the drilling
enthusiastically. He makes me sick. I quit listening to him. He reminds me of Rush Limbaugh, with a slight Liberal "twist" to draw suckers in.

If Reid TRULY wants to gather support for ANWR then he needs to go on Majority Report, or Randi Rhodes (she'll be back tomorrow). But Schultz is NOT where to go. That's like going to church for an abortion. Not gonna get it there, Harry! Wake up!

44. there's no proof that there is even any oil there
my husband used to be an engineer for an oil company

he said that there are prelim reports, but NO DEFINITIVE INFORMATION - no proof- that they will ever actually find oil there.

There were many other places that his company or other companies wanted to drill that looked like a sure thing - only to find out that the oil flowed out long ago due to unseen underground fractures.

48. Keyword: Call it the "Arctic Refuge", instead of ANWR
Saving the "Arctic Refuge", with all its connotations of wild animals and pristine nature, packs much more of an emotional punch than the bland acronym "ANWR", which most people won't recognize unless they're already well-informed and on board.

Framing the terms of the debate is important. Save the Arctic Refuge!

the budget ! Great diary a dkos on it; also environmental web sites are done finished fighting this.

As your constituent and someone concerned about safeguarding our country's irreplaceable natural heritage, I urge you to cosponsor legislation to designate the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge as wilderness (S. 261 and H.R. 567). If you have already cosponsored the wilderness bill, thank you for joining 23 senators and 115 representatives in recognizing the value of protecting this magnificent place.

I also urge you to oppose any effort to open the refuge to oil and gas development. Specifically, please oppose including Arctic drilling language in the fiscal year 2006 budget bill.
