6. The House recently changed the rules..
Previously, a 50/50 vote was all it took to launch an inquiry. (During the last session, DeLay got nailed a couple of times). Sooo the Republicans changed it so that a MAJORITY vote was required to launch an Ethincs inquiry. Since the committee is half and half, nothing against a republican (or a Democrat, to be fair) would be investigated. In other words the committee was defacto shut down. Pelosi put forth the motion to change it back.

Of course it was voted down by the House, but I trust she'll keep it up...

9. I shudder to think if you were consistent in your opinion ...
of changing to the 50/50 rule as it relates to judicial nominees in the Senate.

We should be consistent, IMO, and make/leave all cloture votes at a more than a simple majority, if not for any other reason than to keep the fundies' judges out of the federal judiciary (and out of the SCOTUS too!).

2. I love Nancy Pelosi too. She is a fighter and she is smart. I just get so
sick of seeing Dems stand up and put forth an argument that is valid and pro people and the Rep. shooting them down. It is so morally corrupt.

4. I agree
This is the perfect illustration of why we need a Dem majority in the house. Even if some of those Dems don't vote the way we want on every single issue, they would give us a majority so people like Nancy could get her resolution passed.

In thread after thread, I hear DUers arguing that they won't vote Dem because the Dems aren't perfect. They just won't listen to the facts about how Dems can accomplish nothing if they don't have a majority. That's the way the rules work.

Is it possible that there are people who post on DU who really don't want the Dems in power?

5. Also... I hear people get totally focused on the presidentail candidate
rather than trying to win back the House. It is the House that is the "people's" House - not the White House. Go after the Congress!

7. EXACTLY!
the ENTIRE house is up for re-election every two years. These people MUST maintain their position as a voice

It is the HOUSE that settles an electoral college dispute.

It is the HOUSE that brings articles of impeachment.

Th HOUSE holds the purse strings of Congress.

The Speaker of the HOUSE is THIRD in line to the Presidency.

The House of Representatives is an underutilized seat of power, waiting for a populist movement to come along and USE IT. Newt Gingrich saw that, and the Contract with America swept us Dems right out of the halls.

We need a new, progressive version of that contract. A populist movement that will sweep Dems back in, to clean up the Republican mess, and to pull in the reigns on Bush.
