2. I Am Impressed That She Was Able To Get Through To Him..

Too bad there wasn't an influence like her in his life before this whole mess started...

I think one can never make too much out of the redemptive power of love; not in a phyical sense but in a spiritual sense...

3. This story gets more bizarre....
...she actually helped this guy ditch the stolen vehicle on the outskirts of the city, then drove back to her home to remain his hostage, allowed him to stay overnight, cooked him breakfast and then convinced him to turn himself in.

Uhmmm, and now she is talking to any and all reporters and news media about this experience.:freak:

5. I smell a
made for TV movie happening here.

I'm glad she's ok, but if it had been me I think I would just want to be left alone. That's just me though. Maybe she needs to process this on National TV 24/7. The World as Your Therapist has been made quite popular with the likes of Dr. Phil.

15. She left her daughter with an aunt when the daughter was 1
Her husband was killed (knifed) ..4 years ago which would have made the daughet just a baby.. She left "to get her life on track "...

waited tables, gone to school and apparently unemployed, but living in a fairly nice apartment complex..

There's more to this story, methinks..

I would wait til that $60K check clears before visiting that guy in jail

more on the story @

10. I think she's really lucky
that she didn't meet the same fate as others who cross this guy's path.

I hope she gets the reward.

I guess what bothers me is that there are probably agents and PR people all over her right now. That just seems really weird.

6. I read a long version of it in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution today
and her narration of the story makes more sense. I think it's amazing that she was able to keep her composure the way that she did. And by listening to him, she gained his trust. i

I could be wrong, but I DO think that she kept him from going out and killing someone else.

Only time will tell if she exploits this situation, but from what I've read so far, I'd be surprised if she did.

12. And I think he set his pistol down near her
but I don't know if she was tied up at the time. I'm sure, though, that if I tune to CNN right now, she'll be on the screen, telling us the entire story again.

11. I think Ashley Smith should visit him in jail
to bring him his last meal.

He did after all kill four people in cold blood.

13. It's her call and I have no opinion either way. God knows

I'm not shy about defending religion here at DU but I must admit that when her former pastor and Robert Schuller ("of the Crystal Cathedral") were talking on MSNBC tonight about this "wonderful, wonderful book" ("The Purpose-Driven Life") she was reading to the guy, my gag reflex was starting to kick in. Of course I wish her the best and give her props for getting out of this alive. She seems like a nice person who has had some terrible suffering in her life and didn't need this guy walking into it and taking her hostage.

But I've read some of the sort of Christian writing that Schuller would like -- and the author of "The Purpose Driven Life was a protege of Schuller's -- and it was not exactly Thomas Aquinas or even C.S. Lewis. More like Hallmark Cards, you know? Too schlocky for me.

So, it occurred to me that he let her go so she'd quit reading him that damn book!
