Poll question: What is your degree of political involvment?
Now that Dean is the head, I will give him 6 months to get DNC on a progressive track. IMHO, he has had a decent but a bit underwhelming start.

I intent to run for state committee if not national.

Why not YOU??????

Becoming an active member of your town/ward committee is the first step.

Vote for your HIGHEST level of involvement.

1. I donate to the DNC, and candidates I prefer.
Moving back to Washington DC from Japan here in a couple months, I'm going to try to find ways to volunteer when and where I can.

The sort order is not to disrespect the valuable work of DU. It is ranked in order of the Democratic Party.

6. I just don't care anymore. I now believe that nothing we do will make
a difference either way. The system is too corrupt and the majority of Americans don't have a clue what is going on.

My head hurts from banging it against the wall. It has all been in vain.

22. A bit of sage wisdom
A wise man once said, "if you don't vote, don't bitch".

Actually, it was Steve Earle, in the "Copperhead Road" liner notes.

The same thing holds true for political activism. If you are just going to sit and wallow in self-pitty, then you are as much a part of the problem as those on the other side of the ideological fence. To remain an inert blob only prolongs the problem. Even in the face of a powerful, well-funded, ruthless, amoral opposition, there is never a time to lose hope.

Just ask Johnny Damon and David Ortiz.

28. I don't consider myself one who sits and wallows in self-pity
All I'm saying is that I will no longer invest endless hours trying to stop the corrupt regime now in power.

Eventually the sheep in the red states will realize they've been played for fools. In the meantime, I chose to occupy my remaining days pursuing what I believe to be ventures of higher priority.

To anyone who still has the spark to keep fighting the good fight, more power to you.

12. Other: I participate in Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, etc.
As for party politics, I've been a registered Democrat since 1965, I plan to vote Green in 2006 and probably 2008 (unless the miraculous occurs and the Dems nominate a non-corporate stooge) in hopes that the Dems will get the mesage (if enough follow suit) that votes are to be had (or lost) on the left.

13. "I am a freeper"???
And you got two hits on that choice!!!!

Well, I am active politically, but not in national partisan politics (other than vote registration drives). My interest is in human rights, which include worker rights. The most important issue is to end the war in Iraq and to bring the Bush Administration to justice for their crimes.

Here in Indiana, I want the defeat of the Republican Party at all levels!

16. I do more than just be precinct committeeperson
I contribute to candidates.
I write letters to the editor.
I compile data and resources on a website about issues and candidates for voters, party members and potential candidates.
I save our printing setup costs for our party by laying out our directory fundraiser for the last 9 years. $30 to $40 per page.
I provide information when needed by others.

17. 7 hour check
This is by no stretch of the immagination a scientific poll, but as I suspected a good majority (2/3) do not hold official party positions or elected office. Nothing wrong with that, but that is the way to influence party decisions and select candidates.

Get involved at the town/ward level! You'll find you have a much larger voice.

24. I've done some volunteering,
as well as donating money to candidates that I support. I actually signed on as a precinct committee chair, but I've asked to be replaced because I feel that someone else could do a better job than me.

I'm not really that political by nature. I definitely do not have what it takes to run for and hold political office. I do better supporting others who are suited to that sort of thing.

This election cycle is the first time that I've really gotten active. I will probably continue to stay active, at least to some degree, at least on a local level. The election results made me just want to withdraw into apathy for awhile, even though Dems did surprisingly well in my state. I've only just started going to some meetings again.

You really should have a category for people involved in issues activism, rather than just working for the party. That's an important activity in its own right. It's probably what I will do if I end up getting upset enough with the party to simply give up on it, (which I've come close to doing a few times).

I sign petitions, call, email, write, and donate money to candidates and causes. I checked "I donate", but I do those things as well. I also pass on petitions and emails to my friends and relatives who don't get them, and have gotten others involved to some extent.

30. I do volunteering at the homeless shelter and at the food bank....my
station wagon comes in handy with collecting food. Also the wagon was very good with driving homeless people to the polls. When someone asked me "Why should I vote for Democrats this year?" all I had to do was yell out to the 100 or so workers there..."How many Republican do we have working here?" and no one raises their hands...the homeless sees who cares for them.

I mostly just read the news and post whines and complaints on here. I'm in a bit of a political activity withdrawal stage.

But before the last election I donated to the DNC and a couple of political campaigns (Edwards in the primary, Kerry in the general), and spent two months as a volunteer, doing canvassing, calling, and the like, for the Kerry campaign (a week for Kerry during the New Hampshire primary, a couple months in Wisconsin for the League of Conservation Voters, where I also was a "field organizer"- helped recruit other volunteers to go canvassing and the like, during the general election period).

I also, starting at the age of fifteen, wrote monthly letters to the editor related to politics; but I have fallen off dramatically in terms of frequency.

I don't do a lot with the local Democratic Party 'cause there isn't much of one to speak of, though they are working to get it off the ground again. I helped out a State Representative candidate down here in '02.
