In Biden's words...
From the LA Times:

In his zeal to attack the bankruptcy reform bill, Jonathan Chait's March 4 commentary, "When Democrats Join the Dark Side," mischaracterizes the legislation. In 2001, a similar bill passed the Senate 82 to 16. The provisions affecting consumer bankruptcy were identical to those Chait criticizes.

At the outset, I refused to support bankruptcy reform until fundamental changes were made. I fought to establish a "safe harbor" for those below their state's median income. I also insisted on a provision requiring lenders to post a clear warning about the dangers of making minimum monthly payments, one of the worst debt traps for consumers.

This bill establishes unprecedented protections for child support and alimony, making bankruptcy part of the enforcement system for women and children, who now will be at the head of the line, in front of every other creditor. Is this bill perfect? No. But over several congresses it has earned the kind of bipartisan consensus only balanced legislation can achieve.

Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr.

Delaware

Everybody all line up and throw darts, now!

1. Link. This is the entire letter Biden wrote to the Los Angeles Times.

I would ask Biden how come Diane Feinstein refused to support this bill. She felt consumers would still not be given adequate information regarding such things as--how much they would have to pay over the long run making minimum payments only.

Feinstein voted the bill out of committee, yet voted against cloture and against the bill as she, along with Senator Feingold, felt they were not given a fair opportunity to amend the bill to provide more consumer protections.

4. The Irresponsible Corporate Creditors Protections Act
Otherwise known as Bankruptcy reform.

The irresponsible lending practices of corporate American have come home to roost.

Institutionalized medicine wants to squeeze every last drop out of its victims.

I get credit offers totalling $250,000.00 in the mail every week. Sign on the dotted line, to you and your heirs forever. Or as Warren Buffet calls it, the "sharecropper's society." I called it "indentured servitude" before it was picked up in some columns.

This bill is dangerous to the economy. The dead hand of failed commercial transactions for the consumer will not let go.

Biden is a corporate tool.

I used to be middle class. Now working seventy hours a week for less than one half the pay I made 15 years ago, I don't know what it means.

8. I'm So SICK Of The "It's Not Perfect" Bullshit
Then perfect it, or vote it down. I don't think it's "perfect" that the took $143,000 from credic card companies either, but I DO think it's perfectly OBVIOUS that he's on the take.

14. "And since I also collect shitloads of money from credit card companies,
I not only voted for this bill but committed to writing letters to the editors in order to try to convince people that the senate didn't just screw them royally."

Best,

Senator Joseph Biden

15. Normally, I like Joe very much.
He has performed very well in articulating the missteps and miscalculations of the Bush regime in Iraq. But his support of this bank-loving, elite-supporting bankruptcy bill disappoints me beyond words.
