Why don't progressives use Cable Access?
Edited on Tue Mar-08-05 06:57 PM by firefox
We hear about the bloggers, but why do we not here of progressives using cable access programming? There are more informed people than ever before because of the Internet. Digital camcorders are cheap and so are DVD burners. The country has been in crisis for no telling how long and it is getting worse as corporate America squeezes its representatives in Congress for more profitable laws.

We have famous bloggers, but where are the patriots running the informational blockade by using cable access? Can't Chicago or NYC get a few people together to sling some truth into the airwaves?

What we have is representation without representation.

1. good god! You're a mindreader!
Unless there is some law that prevents political stuff on cable access, anyone can get free time for just asking. At least it used to be that way.

I thought of this yesterday as I flipped past some fishing show.

2. We have it here in Portland.
At night sometimes I come across a local channel (11 for me) where they show, for example, anti-war protest footage or Michael Moore's latest appearance. Good stuff. :)

Portland.

They are an incredible public access station, with excellent, up to date equipment (including a five camera studio truck for remote shoots); light-years ahead of any access station I've been to since or before.

I highly recommend that ANYONE living in Portland get involved with them, it's a fantastic way to make real media and they're really cool folks too.

It's up on N.E. MLK BLVD not too far from the convention center.

I miss it.....a lot.

3. Example in Dallas
A while back I got involved in cable access-the requirements were that you had to be a resident of the city of Dallas and get certified on the equipment (inexpensive classes). I learned how to operate the console, cameras, lighting, etc and then made a show. For practical purposes, you're better off if you have at least several people to do it with you (one person working camera, one console, etc).

A lot of places don't have cable access, for whatever reason. I don't have cable where I live. So, suggesting an alternative. Make a web page that your community would be interested in reading or looking at. For example, put local news or photos of events, movies of meetings, etc up there and along with it, put other stuff you'd like them to read. Make MP3 files for people to download.

4. My local cable access channel is run by a bunch of Republicans
Edited on Tue Mar-08-05 09:54 PM by high density
All of the sane people working on the channel departed last fall after "Stolen Honor" was broadcast without following the proper protocol. To make a long story short, the station was hijacked by a single activist Republican. Since then the channel has also lost its nonprofit status, so times are not looking good for our local cable access channel.

5. I think if it's not "non-profit".. it doesn't fulfill it's obligation
as a "public access channel". This may mean that the cable company has to come up with another one. Not sure, but it's worth investigating. Did your cable company get its contract contingent on its providing public access to the airways?
