Is it ever OK to vote in a Republican primary?
I have a feeling that there may be a lot of Democrats here in Alabama crossing over and voting in the Republican primary in 2006.

There is an election for governor in 06. The incumbent Republican, Bob Riley, is likely to be opposed by Roy "Ten Commandments" Moore in the GOP primary. Moore is very popular here and could very well beat Riley. Riley pissed off his party when he tried to get a huge tax increase for schools passed.

Our lt. governor, Lucy Baxley, is likely to be the Democratic nominee. Odds are she won't have much opposition unless former Gov. Don Siegelman tries to make a comeback. There is no Senate seat up for election in 2006 so there isn't much of anything going on in the Democratic primary.

Now, Roy Moore as governor would be a disaster of biblical proportions (pun intended).

So, in the interests of preventing God from unleashing His wrath upon Alabama, should Democrats vote in the GOP primary to stop Roy Moore?

1. Yes, but more importantly, can New Yorkers vote in an Alabama primary?

2. It depends on the Dem primary.

if you have real input to give there, I wouldn't. but if you don't have any exciting races, why not? we cross over all the time in Texas when there's nothing good on our ballot. be aware, though, that if you build yourself a republican voting history it will get noticed at a later date if you wanna run for office, etc.

edited to add: if you don't have an active precinct chair in your precinct, IMO, *that* would be a very important reason to vote in your Dem primary -- to vote in a real precinct chair who wants to do the work.

3. i see 2 possible sides to it
while many of us would like to see it happen in hopes that the american people would see the extremism of the Republican party.

i think what happens instead is that the media plays them up as being about morals and values and how it's the american people who want that and it's the popular thing.

so if Roy Moore is defeated in the Primary the media could report what he supports is not popular even among people in Alabama.

in order to vote in the republican primaries where all of our local, state and national representatives are chosen. In a nutshell, you vote for the pro-choice, environmentally conscious republican over the anti-choice, pro-developer republican.

Then you vote for the democrat in the general election. And the democrat never wins.

In this situation, I feel it is a democrat's DUTY to vote in the republican primary.

7. I did in Michigan in 2000
McCain beat Bush in MI primary...I did NOT want Bush, though honestly figured no one would if they really paid attention.

If you have a chance to stop it, can vote in Republican primary and it won't affect Dem candidate...

Stop the man! People you care about live there.

10. I almost voted for Anderson in 1980
But in the end I voted for Carter. And I'm proud today of that vote. Jimmy Carter is a good and decent man who didn't get the respect he deserved while he was president.

9. As I said just after the election.
If you can vote for the most liberal Republican. We have to play just as dirty as the Neo-Cons. Do what you got to do to win the freedom of our Nation from the hands of the Neo-Cons.

11. Does Alabama have an open primary?
If it doesn't, you would have to register as a Republican or as an Indpendent depending on your primary rules.

This link should help with any info you need, http://www.sos.state.al.us/election/2005/

12. No open primary
if you mean like the primary they have in Louisiana where Democrats and Republicans all run in the same primary and the top two advance to a runoff if no one gets a majority.

But in Alabama you can cross over and vote in the other party's primary. So even though I am a registered Democrat, all I would have to do is request a Republican primary ballot.

16. Voted for McCain in the 2000 primary and I don't regret it.
Any vote against a Bush is a good vote.
