GOP senator Graham rankles some over comments on Lincoln

By John Byrne | RAW STORY Editor

Senator Lindsey Graham has ignited a new furor in Washington over comments he made over the weekend referring to his state’s difficulty in “getting over” President Abraham Lincoln, with apparent reference to Lincoln’s role in the civil war and the freeing of American slaves, RAW STORY has learned.

“We don’t do Lincoln Day Dinners in South Carolina,” Senator Graham told a Lincoln Day gathering in Tennessee Saturday. “It’s nothing personal, but it takes awhile to get over things.”

According to a Knoxville News Sentinel article published Sunday, Graham entertained an amicable crowd and joked about his predecessor in the Senate, former Sen. Strom Thurmond.

2. When Graham says "it takes awhile to get over things"-- he's right.
It been about 150 years and the south is still electing ignorant, racist rednecks.

It really does take awhile to get over things...

5. Kinda like Germany not getting over VE Day and Roosevelt.
Although I don't think this is the case in Germany as they are ambivalent at worst, guilty at best about the Third Reich years.

So would TR.

They can have Joe McCarthy & Strom Thurmond for their heroes.

9. I am ONE embarrassed South Carolinian
I have lived in SC most of my life and I still do not understand this attitude.

The Confederacy was WRONG!!!!! I am so glad the South didn't win the Civil War.

Lindsey Graham is a Republican and I could NEVER support him, but I thought he was too intelligent to pandered to the racists who worship the Confederate Flag.

Oh, just in case you missed it, SC still flies the Confederate Flag in FRONT of our Capitol building. A few years ago, it was moved from its place of prominence on top of our Capitol building in Columbia to a pole in front of the building.

Until the SC Legislature finally votes to TAKE IT DOWN , I will continue to keep continue to fight.

Support the NAACP boycott of SC if you can. Vacation elsewhere.

10. I'm another
seems like we'd be used to it, eh?

Graham made me ill as he and his fellow gangmembers tried to take out Bill Clinton with that bs impeachemnt (yet supports without hesitation the current traitorous regime).

I just hope people realize that slimeballs like LG don't speak for all of SC.
