Imus's wife has been very active in a campaign to reduce or eliminate the levels of mercury in vaccines ... there is substantial anecdotal evidence (not confirmed by CDC studies) that increased heavy metal levels in vaccines has contributed to the very significant spike in children being diagnosed with autism ...
a Senate bill that Santorum has been pushing would absolve pharmaceutical companies from liability when drugs they produce cause harm to patients ...
Imus really did an excellent job getting in Santorum's face about this ... Santorum weakly tried to defend the bill by arguing that the pharmaceutical industry needs to be encouraged to produce drugs that might be needed to react to bio-terrorism ... Santorum said that some of these drugs might have serious side effects but still would do far more good than harm in a crisis ...
IMUS, however, pointed out that the law, then, should only apply to drugs that would deal with things like an anthrax outbreak but should not apply to regular, childhood innoculations ... Santorum said something like he'll look into it ...
Every time Santorum tried to squirm away, IMUS just kept hitting him over and over with same arguments and Santorum never had an answer ... once again, the threat of terrorism is being used to justify screwing the American public for the benefit of the GOP's corporate friends ...
and one final point ... Santorum tried to argue that, since 1999, it was no longer legal to include thimerosal (mercury-containing preservative) in vaccines ... of course, that shouldn't indemnify the pharmaceutical industry from paying for past damages it may have caused ... but Santorum wasn't exactly telling the whole truth about mercury in vaccines ... check out this article from May, 2004 that shows thimerosal is still being used in flu vaccines:

http://www.cidrap.umn.edu/cidrap/content/influenza/general/news/may0604thimerosal.html May 6, 2004 – Almost 5 years ago, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the US Public Health Service joined in calling for removal of the mercury-containing preservative thimerosal from vaccines. By 2001, all the vaccines recommended for children under age 7 were available without thimerosal or with only trace amounts.
But this year, in recommending for the first time that 6- to 23-month-old children routinely get flu shots, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) did not go on record in favor of a thimerosal-free formulation of the vaccine.
